Hello Siena and thanks for this wonderful job you are doing. 1.) VW 2.) Passat 3.) 4, 2L 4.) Auto 5.) 2000 6.) US 7.) ? First, the initial problem with the car is 1. Difficult to start when cold usually in the morning when starting it for the first time on a particular day. The engine will starts then dies after approximately 2 seconds, at other times it last for about a minute or 2 before it dies. What I used to do is, whenever it starts I quickly put it in drive and accelerate at the same time. If I'm not fast enough it dies. Once I'm able to start and move it that's the end of that problem that day. 2. A rewire that was helping on it checked for fuel pressure and discovered it was ok, suggest cold start but also is working fine, service nozzle and injector and clean O2 sensor to no avail. But after all these services the car has stated to jerk like trying to choke. So now if the car eventually starts, it drives as normal but becomes sluggish and jerky once warm and the engine will dies but will start immediately or after like 2 minutes. So the rewire has aggravate the issue. 3. There is all these warning light display on the dash: Check with a tap icon; temperature icon always flashing even in the morning before the car has warmed, the temperature is always on 90 even when warm; ABS; Brake; Car icon with trunk opened; EPC; and is flashing brake fault STOP and service manual. Dear siena, I am an avid follower of your comments on this thread. my details are as follows:- Make: Volkswagen Model: Touareg Engine size: 4.2L, V8 Transmission Type: 6 speed tiptronic Model year: 2003 Specification: U.S Drive Configuration: 4WD I bought this car as tokunbo in march 2012. Since then I have had cause to change the brake pads twice the upper and lower arms and the back arms but the car still makes noise when i encounter gallops. However the major problems I have now are as follows:- (1)Transmission (Gear). The car refuses to engage gear from (P)park to (N)neutral or (D)drive occassionally. Normally this happens five days to a week after a red warning sign appears on the dashboard. The sign reads thus " BRAKE. BRAKE FAULT STOP VEHICLE". This has happened about four times since purchase. Each time I have to wait for my mechanic to come and 'scan' and "reprogram' the vehicle before I can move. I have changed the transmission oil recently to no avail. Other yellow signs that are permanently on the dashboard are ABS,Exhaust system malfunction, Airbag fault, ESP malfunction. Can any of this unresolved issues cause this embarrassing problem?. (2)Engine I noticed after a recent trip lagos - abuja - aba - lagos that the engine oil was totally short when i dipped the next morning( not showing on the dipping stick). My mechanic has confirmed that there is no leakage but that two plugs are soaked. He has changed them and the car is moving normally. Does this confirm my worst fears?. The mileage is just 79,000km. (3)Shaft? Occasionally on turning fully i hear sharp noises 'pum pum' as if the tire wants to pull out. But when i return the steering the noise ceases and the car moves normally. My mechanic removed the two front tyres to check the suspension etc and he claims everything is intact. What do you think.? (4) Front Light My head lamps are weak and i cannot drive comfortably at night. My mechanics have changed the bulbs and the setting but the result is the same. He is suggesting I may need to buy the 'charging" system. is he correct? I look forward to your response. Thanks |

tondifari: Dear siena, I am an avid follower of your comments on this thread. my details are as follows:- Let's look at the braking and suspension issues first. Now two sets of brake pads in 8 months is unusual.The Touareg is a heavy vehicle, and not particularly fast. Your front brake pads should last at least 12,000 miles or 15 months. The rears last almost twice as long, and are replaced every other second front set. So two things spring to mind here: a) The pads were el cheapo Chinese items. b) Your discs are badly scoured / grooved, so are wearing your pads down fast. c) Your calipers are partially seized, leaving the pads in constact contact with the discs. Were the brake pads brand new, or used? Also, you don't specify if the brake pads replaced were front, or rear. Your lower arms are also a cause for concern. Again, either Chinese copies, or used items. Were they brand new? Because fitting used suspension to a vehicle as heavy as an SUV is a waste of time and money. (1)Transmission (Gear). There are a bundle of wires that run under the driver's seat. And there are exposed junctions. I have a gut feeling, you're getting water into your Touareg, via the front window seal. You need to get this looked into. As per the wires, you'll need a good Volkswagen garage to pull them up, dry them out, then carefully insulate them as required. It is a common Touareg issue. When it happens, the Tiptronic safety lock won't allow the lever to shift from PARK. The guy that clears your fault codes is treating the symptom, and not the cause. Your ABS, ESP, Airbag and EGR faults will need to be scanned, and I'll need the codes. Please don't allow your mechanic to simply clear the codes! I'll need the codes to have any chance of remotely assisting you. But I have my suspicions. Does your dash ever stop working - as in speedo and rev counter? Does your Touareg have a sunroof? (2)Engine The oil issues: What grade of oil are you using? It's very important. And with soaked plugs, I suspect your rocker cover gaskets are leaking oil into the spark plug wells. They are rubber, and there's one separate seal on each V bank that seals the spark plug tubes. They need to be replaced. Do not be tempted to seal it with that black goey stuff Nigerian mechanics love. You need the PROPER gaskets. (3)Shaft? I'm not satisfied your outer CV joints are in good shape. The "clicking" noise is characteristic of a failing joint. You definitely need to take your Touareg to a Volkswagen Centre. (4) Front Light When you say your headlamps are "weak", do you mean dim? Does your Touareg have HID headlamps? Do the plastic lenses look kind of a dull yellow? You mention "charging system", which I understand as the HID ballasts. Please clarify. |

The lower arms are tokunbo. The car is using Baloons as shocks. All this repairs were carried out by mechanics in the popular volkswagen and audi market at itire lagos.I have taken your advice on sourcing for genuine volkswagen parts. Transmission. I will check the wires as you adviced.I will send the result of the scan to you tomorrow. My touareg has a sunroof. I noticed today that the car is not really moving well, and may not be exceeding gear 2 as the gearshift indicator is no longer showing on the dash board. Engine. I use mobil 1 which sells at N9,000/4 litres in lagos. I will also look into the gaskets as you mentioned. Ditto for the noggle joint. Lights I cant really say whether the lights are a dull yellow, but now that you mentioned it i will have to compare it with another touared to confirm. Hid ballast may be the technical name for it. The used 'charger' they offered me here was for N50,000 and it sits inside the headlamp cover which is different from the charger that comes with the bulb . Is it the same thing? |

KenDStar: Hi Sienna, My apologies for my late response, Ken. It wasn't intentional, believe me. Now, most will see the smaller-engine versions being the best to buy in terms of maintenance and running costs. The smallest engine is the 3,2 VR6 24V. It's marginally better than the 4,2 V8 40V. The 3,2 VR6 suffers from one issue - timing chain stretch / tensioner failure. Replacement involves removing the engine. The 4,2 V8 is durable, it's belt-driven. And as long as it's replaced every 90,000 miles, it'll be fine. If it has a sunroof, make sure all the water drain tubes are clear. If they get blocked, water will leak into the cabin. This is rare though, they get blocked by dead leaves, if it's left parked under trees for months on end. The Aisin 6-speed Tiptronic is good, but very sensitive to fluid grade. Mix regular ATF, and it can cause shifting issues. Usually solved with a complete drain and refill with the correct fluid. Like most heavy SUV's, front lower suspension arms can wear early, but replacement bushes are available, so not a big deal. It's not as cheap as the Toyota Landcruiser to run, but it has better road manners, handles more like a car, rather than a big SUV. And is also brilliant off road. The suspension articulation is greater than that of the Land Cruiser. Overall, the Touareg is a good buy. The 4,2 V8 40V engine is robust, and vice-free. I don't own a Touareg, but both my cars use the same 4,2L V8 engine, which have never missed a beat. And I work on enough Touaregs to know what their weaknesses are, just like every vehicle has its own pecularities. |

@Siena Interesting Analysis. I long followed the myth that the Touareg was a "No-Go" SUV. Now, I'm Enlightened. So you're recommending the V8 over the V6? And From what I'm told, there isn't much of a difference on Fuel Economy between the two Engine variants, does this hold true? |

HQ: @Siena Interesting Analysis. Yes, I would always pick the belt-driven V8 over the chain-driven V6. Fuel consumption figures aren't that much different between both versions. And as I stated earlier, the chain drive assembly for the V6 is at the rear of the engine, meaning even adjusting the tension is an engine-out job. |

I had being following your posts on volkswagen products and was greatly impressed with the talk about the product. I am a toyota cars user but just got a small vw polo 4-weeks ago. But I am faced with a problem on the car right now. The issue is that sometimes if I try to move faster with my air-conditioner on, the car doesn't want to move nor respond well to my acceleration. So this makes me quickly switch off the AC. It then moves forward faster. The AC is a factory fiited one. Today I tried not to put the air-conditioner on when going out in the morning but i still experience the same problem but not as frequent as when the AC is on. I had spoken with my mechanic but i have not taken the car to him yet. I love this small vw becos, though small in size but more balanced than i expected of such a small car. Pls what could be the problem of the car? And what do you suggest i do. Looking forward to reading your response. Thanks |

If anyone goes to Owode to look for VW parts, you will find out there is no gear box in almost all the VW cars in the parts shops. Fuel, Fuel Fuel. That is the problem. I held a meeting with the Major Car dealer in Lagos and he told me that his job was to sell cars while my job was to put pressure on the government to start producing Premium fuel. I went to SON and they confirmed that we use Regular Unleaded. This wss in 2006 when we just converted to unleaded fuel. Many of you will remember that before 2005, when you buy fuel at the fuel stations, they use a rod to open the fuel cap because the pump nozzle was too big for the unleaded cars that were being destroyed by leaded fuel. PPMC, in a meeting that I had with them at NNPC Towers in Abuja in 2006, told me that any car that does not use unleaded regular is on his own. I suggest that every potential car owner should research well before buying a car, a car that works with Nigerian fuel. Mitsubishi Motors have tropicalised their cars to run on unleaded regular, ditto Porsche, Chrysler. Mercedes is run on Euro 2 in the country and we all know what that means. When you changed the transmission oil, what ATF oil did you use? Secondly, your passat is very mindful of the fuel you use. It does not tolerate regular unleaded. The issue with transmissions in Passat is a legendary one that even VW in Germany could not help, concerning gear box failures in Nigeria. What I will suggest in the interim is to check the gear brain box by the pigeon hole. Maybe the cables you complained of were the cables that is linked to the gear brain box. zakaliyu: You'll need to scan the Drivetrain to read stored fault codes in the TCU. The issues with the ZF5HP19-A are legendary. It is very intolerant of incorrect ATF fluid. There are also two separate fluids, not to be confused, or mixed. * Differential oil. * Gearbox oil. The one that will cause shift issues, is the ATF in the gearbox. Leaks are rare, but they can occur. Often via a bad torque converter seal. Replacement means removing the engine or transmission. It is VERY important the correct fluid is used - incorrect fluid will kill your transmission faster than low or dirty fluid of the correct grade. It sounds like your shifts are not as smooth as they should be. You're getting the classic "thump" between shifts. When your fluid was replaced, what type was used? And was the filter replaced too? Because if not, it's a waste of money. The drain and refill procedure is pretty complex, and if not done properly, can destroy a healthy tranny. A pump is required for the procedure, and it MUST be done at the correct temperature. The ZF5HP19-A takes approx. 9 litres of ATF, though as you'll never completely drain the torque converter, you're looking at 7 litre. Did your mechanic remove the oil pan? This MUST be removed, and the magnets thoroughly cleaned. Get your transmission scanned, and post the codes here. I'm a bit concerned about the burnt wires behind your glovebox. How where they replaced? Single wires cut and joined? How did they get burnt? Or did you buy the car with the wires in that state? Oh, and your TCU is NOT behind the glovebox. It's under the front floor carpet, accessible after removing the sound proofing and panel. On RHD models, it's in the passenger's side, it may well be on the driver's side in LHD models. |

The car is a Volkswagen Vento 1994 model salon car with FWD automatic gear transmission. Also I've equally noticed that the car makes a sharp squirling noise whilst its engine is running & it is stationary, whenever the steering wheel is turned fully either way. Problem 1) I hear a cracking sound at first start in the morning - This has been happening from time of purchase over 2 years ago, a garage attendant once told me it is 'normal' but i still get concerned. 2) I Once spotted slight slash of oil in the radiator coolant ( but was not sure if it was from the engine or the water container that was used to refill the reservoir 3) I changed all the complete suspension system and front Dampers (Bought from GSF)but still hear a knocking sound at BUMPS, it used to be less obvious but now very pronounced. I have been suggested to get the shaft re greased (as thats the only thing that was not touched/changed) but i am not sure if its from there. 4) It jerk a bit on first move acceleration (Like a lag in fuel pump and late response), i overcome this by accelerating slowly and gradually at first move, which i think should not be. 5) I have a single key at purchase and the keyless entry needs reprogramming (The hazard indicator lights up on pressing the remote to show there is a signal but it won't Lock or Unlock the doors). I have read few things about re-programming the key but non addressed how to do itt using one key (if you can help) The car drives. Regards |

On the issue of availability of VW spares. you don't need to panic as I can assure the spares are available & affordable too. maintenance cost on the average as I spend a little between #3000-#3500 for basic oil &oil filter servicing' etc. on the car being low I'll advice you change your tyre size. Mine came with 195/60 R14 86H and I changed them to 185/70 R14 88H. cheers. 1 Like |

bros My issue include no 50 and another that is not particularly itemised on your chart.I drive a Passat 2006 2.0Fsi Full options. The keyless entry remote FOB is not workin erractically. Atimes locks and it takes a whole lot of pressing to get it atimes up to an hour.Locking the car is a challenge.VW center cost r ridiculous. THe Car CD loader palys CDs but no sound.Meanwhile the Radio works well with volume etc working fine I need help!; |

Mr siena pls I need your advice, Am being offered a 2000 jetta american specs , automatic,2.0L, 4 cylinder engine. He claimed to have bought it 3 years ago at 120,000 miles and barely used it. Its presently on 130,000 miles. I trust his judgment but I want to know how reliable the car is especially as no one has complained about it on this your wonderful thread. |

Before Siena responds, I will advise you not to buy. It is already close to 180kms for a 4 cylinder that has been running on unleaded fuel instead of Premium for 3 years. It is the body you are buying. If you really want to buy, run a scan and post all that you read from the scanner. I guess Camshaft position sensor will be among the results.
