We have to be careful with how we compare and talk about that era. There is absolutely no way a coach like Wenger who had won numerous league titles including being invincible, FA Cups and a trip to the UEFA suddenly became content making top 4. You think selling his best players gave him any joy? Some of these things are tough.

I challenge anyone to mention a top class coach during that era that Wenger competed against or even now who would have come close to achieving top 4 considering our reality at the time. If anything, top teams like Madrid and even City openly recruited him. When the position became vacant, did you wonder why no top coach wanted to touch it?

Furthermore, Arteta is benefiting from the sacrifices made by Wenger during those difficult years. Keeping the club alive by qualifying for the UCL, getting bargains and selling his best players kept the club afloat financially. Arteta got a taste of something similar in his first 2 years when he had no funds. We flirted with relegation before finishing 8th in consecutive seasons. We just couldn’t compete with other teams financially.

If Arsenal finds itself in a similar situation today, I can assure you that we will lose Saka/ Saliba/ Odegaard / Rice and Arteta will jump ship ASAP! We will have to rely on our academy and bargains to even stay alive in the EPL.

I believe Blueray and Sod have spoken most of what I wanted to say, but I just want to ask a question.

When did we finally got over that "period"?
I mean that period of we always paying back for the stadium and not being forced to sell our stars?

To be honest, I feel that Wenger elongated that period more than what it was actually. He was on some kind of comfort zone without pressure as long as he keeps on making money for the owners and keep on making top 4, he's cool with it. I knew how many times then Wenger will be proactive once our top 4 is in danger even if it means going to the market, we can even go on a run of form (2011/12 season is one big indicator) but once we're settled inside top 4, we'll be lax.

I appreciate Wenger for what he did that early years for us but I believe that dark days, he made it more than what it actually was

I know many guys will not want to cut Wenger some slack but Tottenham are having a similar issue with their stadium.
Eventually Harry Kane left.

Mourinho, Conte and Co. all complained about LEVY.

U guys are looking at only the football aspects.
See there was a time Everton were buying players anyhow.
But their revenue still remain the same that's why them dey dock.points now.

No manager will like to sell his best players unless the players want to leave.

Arsenal was first to completely build a new stadium.

Others want to do additions now.

Top four every year for 19 years is no joke even with good players ask Liverpool.

If u are building a brand from the scratch. It's not that easy.

Tottenham built from scratch.
They just didn't move ground but they demolished the old one completely and built an exquisite new one

And Tottenham were better in terms of spending and holding players than arsenal. They don't just have a great coach all those while.

Mourinho and Conte are extravagant coaches that even if you give them the world this season, they won't be contented and still demand for another world next season while still playing boring football. It's one big reason I disagreed with Roland then when he said
why are we watching Conte (a better coach) going to Spurs while we're still stuck with Arteta.

Check na, dem still deh buy players and they're still holding their star players. Kane played his better life there, moved at 30 and still commanded 100m, while we sold Nari, fab etc at their peak for peanuts.
If na us get Son and Eriksen, we for don sell dem tey tey during their prime

It's through Tottenham and I think Athletico I knew this stadium ish that held us for almost 10yrs na farce. Especially Tottenham cos they're not richer than us, they have a stingy owner yet they didn't sell their star players and still bought correct ones (while still holding to their star players).

This!

Athletico didn't spend almost a decade in the wilderness cos they built a stadium, same with Tottenham. In fact, Tottenham rarely relies on their academy products; they kept on signing more and more players every season while keeping their already established stars.

The fact that Tottenham didn't fall off from their regular top 6 position over time just no want make me forgive Wenger and the board for taking us on a ride for too long.

You know Spuds did all or nothing before us and they moved into their staduim the year it was released
That documentary opened my eyes and the man was using staduim as excuse as if we were the ony one to build it
One point, levy openly para for eriksen for putting him in a tight corner for selling him for cheap if not for camera i swear he can assault him

Did anyone know viera was suppose to replace wengay with th14 as his assistant which he rejected.
Well baba had issues with viera before he left for juve and th14 was openly criticizing him which baba told him to resign from u17 team and face punditry
I won't say ebening was impromptu but he wasn't the first choice then, the board lost control of arsenal, fans are boycotting matches, staduim is becoming deserted they had to act if we remember he recently signed 2 years extension the plan was to find correct head coach before then but with the way fans are behaving flying planes with messages they just have to let him go(sack accordingly to wilshere grin) and ebening was the only one readily available that suit our style

Wenger is like all those private school teachers that joined the school after their NYSC, became a good teacher, later became the oldest staff and then became the principal of the school.

U know people like that would've gain the school owners trust so much that he will practically be the school administrator. The owners won't really listen to the complain of other teachers provided the principal keeps getting their pocket lined whether he takes care of the staff welfare or not.

Yeah, before I was believing that farce small small but I wasn't really convinced cos how can building a new stadium affect a big team for such a long time like that. It doesn't really add up or make sense.

When Tottenham and Athletico did theirs, that's when I knew these people took the fans on a lamba for soooo long

They did not clarify much to me if I am to be honest because they just said things that have been debunked on this thread severally. 200M from where? On this thread I showed that such never existed nor happened.

My question to you guys is, post Wenger, did Emery get the financial backing? If there was money $200M as alleged by many sitting somewhere that Wenger was sitting on, how did it disappear post Wenger.

Show me where Arsenal were financially competitive post Wenger. Do you want me to show you Emery’s signings? How about Arteta? In his first 2 years and after Kroenke bought off Usmanov, where was the investment? We were flirting with relegation. Wasn’t there supposed to be 200M sitting somewhere?

I am sorry but I disagree with the position many of you are taking. They are mostly perception, if I am to use Blueraydick’s word.

Honestly, it is disappointing to read a lot of the stuff being dished out here. I asked them to mention one big named coach that was interested in Arsenal when Wenger left..absolutely no one and it was for a reason.

Guys are mentioning Liverpool, do you think Klopp will stay through those years if Liverpool were not investing? I keep asking, where is this 200M after Wenger left?

Today, the club is financially healthy and in a place where it can make investments and suddenly everyone wants to call Wenger out, I mean..

I have said it here severally, fans should educate themselves about the finances of their club and not just football.

Few pages before this Edu was detailing how Arsenal were able to complete Rice’s signature and everyone was applauding.

Now, do the same for Wenger when he sold his best players.. where did revenue from sales of his best players go? With a straight face, tell me where it went to.

Sérgio Conceição attacked a referee and the mayor of Huelva in the final of a children's football tournament in Spain, where a Porto youth team was participating, per @eldesmarque.

He initially said a few words to the referee and was even prevented from entering the field by security guards.

whether we were paying for stadium or not. Whether there was 200m somewhere or not. Wenger and the whole board fumbled.

I mean, wouldn't Arsenal have earned same money or even bigger if the target was the EPL trophy? What did we have to lose if we compete for trophies instead of top 4? No be money we go collect? I know the squad needed improvement but no be money person dey use find money?

No be say the team was that bad sef. A quality signing in two or three positions and we would be competing.

Even during Wenger we broke our transfer record thrice (Ozil, Laca and Auba respectively) with the last two been broken back to back.

We might not be financially competitive and I doubt we're even financially competitive now but what we lacked then is at least spending money when due while not selling our key players. (Much like how Liverpool is doing under Klopp)

Under Emery, we signed a Pepe for 72m, we signed torreira, Ceballos for two years, signed young Saliba for 27m(which is a big fee for a youngster) and Leno.

Most of these players were very decent at least when we bought them and that was money we used.

We might probably disagree to agree but Arsene hands wasn't really tied the way he made us to believe

From 2006 — 2013?
Aside the Emirates deal, sponsorship deals, revenues from tickets, EPL, UCL and other commercials like jersey sales, you believe with all these revenues, (minus best players sales), it couldn't pay for the stadium for almost 10yrs?

Naaaahhhh, I don't believe that.

Ozil had the highest big chances and highest chances that season, a record still present till now. Classic prime Ozil.

Didier Deschamps on Arsenal's William Saliba: "He is having a good season, but he also does things that I don't like so much. For France, he has limited game time, but when he plays, that hasn't necessarily gone well."

First Southgate, now Descamp.

That era was different from this sha. During that time our play was concentrated on a striker putting the ball at the back of the net and the wingers just acting like a supporting cast. That's why we needed someone like Auba during that time cos Giroud too cast us.

But now, our play revolves around team creation and fluidity hence one goalscoring burden isn't shouldered by one person

The bolded just looks as if he has personal bias with the player. Coaches are known to be diplomatic when answering questions regarding their players (except if the player fvcks up well) but Deschamps have been doing quite the opposite for Saliba and this is not the first time.

Southgate own with Ben White Is understandable but this Deschamps own is not understandable one bit. If him no like Saliba make him talk
