Healed Both Ways

TEXT: MARK 8:22-26

"After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly" (Mark 8:25).

Health is wealth. No one enjoys this world without good health. However, physical health or healing is of little or no meaning if the soul is sin-sick. Considering the total wellness of man, spiritual health or deliverance from sin is the first of all forms of blessings to come into God’s eternal promises.

The blind man in our text was brought by good neighbours that Jesus might heal him. Showing him great kindness and affection, Jesus took him out on a walk that He might gain his confidence and impart grace into his life above the healing that he sought. When Jesus spat into his eyes and touched him the first time, his blind eyes were opened but he saw men like trees. He probably could not withstand the sudden burst of light because he had not seen for a long time. Jesus therefore touched him the second time perhaps to reassure him. As He looked up to heaven from where the help came, the blind was made totally whole.

The Lord could have healed this man by a single touch but He chose the way He did it to drive home to us an essential truth, namely, that there are great spiritual blessings, truth and knowledge we may never receive if we confess not our imperfection like the blind man did when he said, "I saw men like trees, walking." It is only then that the Lord can heal our sinful soul and change our carnal perception (Job 33:27,28).

If you happen to be healed physically, endeavour also to be saved; for only on this score lies eternal and enduring blessings.
