Ibeto to Commence Cement Production in Ebonyi
From Ahamefula Ogbu in Port Harcourt, 10.10.2007

Managing Director, Ibeto group of Companies, makers of Ibeto Cement and Chairman of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Sir Cletus Ibeto, has said he is setting up a factory that will produce cement from Limestone in Ebonyi State.
According to him, though the business was capital-intensive, he has already done feasibility studies, which shows that the raw materials for the production was abundant enough that they can supply other African countries.
He said this when the Director General of SMEDAN, Mrs Modupe Adelaja visited the N12 billion cement factory in Port Harcourt, and congratulated him for overcoming the set back of closure.
“When the factory starts production, I will use this same jetty which took us 10 months to sandfill before pilling to export cement to West and other African countries,” he said.

It is a prerequisite to have the type offacility we have here to export the product even ifyou manufacture from limestone”, he said.Ibeto stated that the setting up of an average cementproduction factory from limestone takes about threeyears but insisted that he was already into it andwill not look back since it was part of the promiseshe made to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua prior to thereopening of his factory.He said “I have forgiven and forgotten, only God knowswhat happened” in an apparent reference to the closureof his business by former President Olusegun Obasanjoso that he can concentrate to take his businesses tothe heights he has planned which needs a clear vision.He told the delegation which was later joined by theRivers State Commissioner for Commerce, Mrs. RoselynKonya who also praised his efforts and vision as suchan enterprise was capable of engaging the youths andcheck restiveness.Ibeto also told Adelaja that it was not true that heabandoned SMEDAN which he is Chairman but pointed outthat since he was not in production, he could notchair a body on which what he used to ascend theposition was not longer in existence.He explained that now he was back into production, hehas adequate platform to attend and direct business ofthe body, adding, “I have no other business other thanproduction since I am not a trader”. In her speech, Adelaja said, “We are here to rejoicewith you on the reopening of your multi-billion nairafactory, it is the grace of God that saw you throughthat period and we are happy that it is over”.She extolled the entrepreneurial qualities of Ibeto,as it takes only a man filled with such to go throughthe trying period and asked him to always remainresilient as his efforts were putting food on thetable of many families.She further appealed to the Rivers State government todo everything to protect genuine entrepreneurs likeIbeto as their contributions would help stemrestiveness.In her speech, Konyan said that the reopening of thefactory and the business going on there was a proofthat Port Harcourt was safe and not as bad as reportedespecially as Governor Celestine Omehia has moved tocheck the issue of cultism.She promised to complain to the Commissioner for Worksover the condition of the access road to the plantwhich Ibeto said he built but it fell into disrepairduring the period they were thrown out of businessthrough the Obasanjo closure.

@Post

Congrats to them. Atleast, people now have a choice and can choose to buy Dangote cement or Ibeto cement. Monopoly over the cement market would have only increased the price of cement and the overall cost of building a house.
