Well, I have been following this forum for sometime now. Hopefully, I intend coming to the University of Portsmouth to study a business inclined undergraduate course. By the grace of God, I should be there by january.
I was hoping our folks out there will keep updating us on a lot of survuval tips, so that we would not miss them out as we are preparing.
What part of UK are you in?

Ask specific question and somebody will answer you, a lot of things written here already applies to almost everybody coming to the UK to study, if you haven't found any useful then ask

Thanx boss... You have been doing a great work here. One thing bothering me is that of accomodation. How can I secure a cheap place I can stay on arrival since I dont know anybody or friend there, from where I can now search fir a better place? I learnt from previous posts that it is cheaper and better to stay off campus, I have been thinking of how to secure a comfortable and yet inexpensive one so that I can have a place I can stay on arrival.

Book for a hotel accommodation for 2days, ibis hotel in Portsmouth is just next building to Portsmouth university buildings.

Walking down to fratton park area of Portsmouth and look for a house, its about 15-20mins walk from the university, many students live in those area and university bus takes student to those places free.

Contact the international office and ask for the list of registered private landlords and have a look at the rooms and prices then contact them to make appointment for viewing.

you can also do this before arriving, make contact phone and emails, so you can start viewing as soon as you check into the hotel on arrival

You must stop posting all in capitals. It's like you are shouting.

Birmingham is a big city with much unemployment.
There is a very large Indian and Packistani comunity who will never give even menial jobs to African.
West indian community is separate but beware of drugs and gangs.
Plenty of ethnic foods in some areas and central market.

Birmingham City University is a new school, not one of the old respected universities.

Hi guys, I intend going for my Masters in Kingston University, its in Southwest London, in January. The problem I don't know what to take over there. Please I need your advice on whether I should do my shopping here in Nigeria or over there? Secondly, what do I need to take there, from Naija? Thirdly, I intend to cook when I get there, where do I go to get cheap foodstuffs?

Thanks

Take your maintenance money, your regular clothes plus cardigans and jumpers if you have any, you will find everything you need within a couple of weeks
a couple of trips to south east london and you'll be sorted with foodstuffs

Arrive at least a week before lecture starts

Yea do that. The CRB takes time though but it one of the fastest job you can see. Just try doing the CRB and keep applying for other types of you want. I did Care while i was in school as that was the easy job available

I have been doing a lot of research on how life is for students in UK & have a question that has been on my mind for sometime now.
Is it possible for a student on tier 4 visa in UK to undergo any other vocational training there, maybe to increase his/her chances to get a job in a vocational field? Any info on how one can do so easily, even though it will cost me some money. Thanx

Hi guys, please I got my visa and am thinking of travelling on saturday. The problem now is that, what I packed is small since I was hoping to shop in the uk. Please wat do I need to carry? Secondly, is it true that I can be delayed for travelling with only one bag, as a first time traveller?

Not true, you can travel with even nothing.

Not sure if there are jobs for barbers. They are quite a few around but not sure if they are actually looking for someone as most of the barbers are actually the owners. I cant say as they might be looking for someone part time also. You can try when you come around. Most of them are around the Fratton area which where most Naijas are.

I beg to disagree with you. There is only one African barber around Fratton (on Fawcett Rd) and how do you justify your statement that Fratton is where most Nigerians are?

It will but not as a student. You can do it inhouse. I had a friend who did it in house when i was in school but na big risk. There are few barbers around portsmouth. Top design is the barber most naija guys i know visit(Fratton) but there are others too that cuts hairs the naija way around but most guys prefer Top design.

My concern is just the best method on how I could make ends meet as a student in portsmouth. This issue of no jobs is kinda bothering me, driving me to find out any other substitute without keeping my life and visa at risk.
Suggestions please from our folks that have schooled or still leaving there.

I dont know about any other city but in Portsmouth, there is a better chance of you getting a part time job being a care worker. Most of the guys i know who came in in September are doing that now.
