OWERRI-The controversial relocation plan of Imo State University, IMSU, Owerri, to Governor Rochas Okorocha's country home, Ogboko, may have come to an abrupt end, as government has said it will now establish three universities in each of the three senatorial zones of the state.


Okorocha announced the new arrangement in his "State of Imo" address, which he presented on Tuesday at Heroes Square, Owerri.

"It is also the desire of this administration to establish three universities in the three senatorial zones and I believe this would bring the needless controversy over relocation of Imo State University to a closure," Okorocha said.

On the current industrial action by the institution's Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the governor said his administration was taking steps to resolve the impasse so that normal academic activities could commence.

"We are, however, concerned about some financial transactions that took place in the university and, in particular, the borrowing of N800 million from a commercial bank, which has remained a burden to the university," Okorocha said.

He announced that students of Imo State origin studying in IMSU shall be entitled to a scholarship of N100,000 each as against the subsisting payment of not more than N50,000 as fees by each student.

"Appropriate benchmarks shall be set for acceptable performance and students who fail to achieve the set benchmarks each year, shall have the scholarship discontinued," Okorocha said.

Yes as much as i agree Imo state need more schools but it should be technological schools with affiliation to foreign countries so that they would have the best and ready to be employers.

I AM A FAN OF THE GOVERNOR BUT I DONT THINK THE WAY TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF RELOCATING THE STATE UNIVERSITY IS BY ESTABLISHING THREE UNIVERSITIES. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM OF THE STATE IS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MORE UNIVERSITIES. A UNIVERSITY IS NOT A SECONDARY SCHOOL. HE SHOULD RETHINK THIS ESPECIALLY WITH REGARDS TO FUNDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW UNIVERSITY. HE HAS TOO MANY THINGS AND SHOULD TAKE THINGS EASY. THE RELOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY TO HIS VILLAGE IS EVEN UNNECESSARY NOW AS THE MONEY TO BUILD A NEW CAMPUS SHOULD BE USED FOR BETTER THINGS. THERE ARE SEVERAL ISSUES BEGGING ATTENTION IN IMO STATE AND THE GOVERNOR SHOULD FACE THEM SQUARELY. NOTHING SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DISTRACT HIM FROM ACTUALIZING HIS GOOD INTENTIONS FOR THE STATE.

Running universities cost money.

Funding is the greatest challenge for universities in Nigeria and this should be soughted out before commencement rather than senatorial favoritism.

Surely, he meant he plans to create the enabling conditions for three new universities to be created and nothing more?
If he actully had the state and not the private sector in mind when he made this remark, I would say the brain was not fully engaged.

Gov Rochas Okorocha is such a noise maker. I can't count how many promises he has made since he came to power; yet how many has he fulfilled. God save him from those 'Nkwobi and Isiewu advisers' of his that are gradually leading his government to perdition.

Why doesn't he invest in the current universities in the state and bring it up to world class institutions?
Why create another substandard university just to satisfy political equations, What a waste of money.

As a citizen of Imo State, I feel sad that Rochas has turned the state into his personal foundation. How on earth is he supposed to fund this 3 new universities at a time IMSU is begging for upgrade. How is he going to sustain the payment of N100000 to students given the huge number of skul. Rochas shud tell himself d truth.

rochas is not serious. go to imsu and see how bad a university can be and he is talking of building new ones.

I am sure when he has a quarrel with his wife, he marries 3 new ones instead of settling the rift.
The process with which leaders are chosen in our polity needs to be reassessed. Something is fundamentally wrong with it.

I agree with Establishing new universities besides he is not the cause of the bad condition at the present university. the University lacks poor management and there is nothing much a governor can do about that. we all know the problem in Nigeria is fewer universities. i can't imagine a classroom meant for 50 students is used for 300 students.
