I dont have any english test result (i dont really want to do any)

i would like to do my research in the areas of economics management or finance

Hi,

BSc in what? MSc in what? Good schools would specifically look at the courses you took at undergraduate and graduate schools before they favorably consider your applications to pursue a PhD degree in Economics/Finance. You may want to spell out each course you took in your BSc and MSc programs.

Many deadlines have long passed, but there are some programs that are still accepting applications. Meanwhile, a part-time job is not always relevant as most PhD Economics/Finance programs fund almost all accepted competitive students.

Visit the following websites and apply to any of the PhD programs that interest you.

You have really missed out, considering your late decision to pursue a PhD. Nonetheless, all hope is not lost. I wish you all the very best.

Good luck!!!

***If you see a school whose deadline was March 30-April 8, still go ahead and apply.

@tanimola God bless you a million times. I am going through all those links right now.

You know I have a feeling that all those scholarships in Europe are no go areas given that they are limited and you will be up against many first classes, you get my drift?

So I would mind getting an unfunded position. But it seems even if i don't get in this session I will have to do all thes GRE GMAT TOEFL crap, most seem to be demanding it.

By the way i studied economics undergrad and finance and investment postgrad.

Any one with a good strategy to pass all these GRE and co that doesn't involves too much study? Is there a site I can just brush up and pass?

Not all the schools require a GRE test score. Could you enumerate the courses you have taken so far? What did you cover in your undergraduate economics and graduate finance courses?

In the under grad i covered courses like: micro and macro economics, statistics, economic analysis, maths for economics, econometrics, labour economics, and my research was quantitative involving regression.

In my masters capital mkt analysis, corporate finance, financial reporting, fixed interest investment, further quants etc. My research was also quantitative hear.

I am also CFA level 2

You think you can get me an admission without me having to apply? smiley just kidding. but any extra help would be appreciated

Your background is very relevant. However, your not having many math courses under your belt may hurt you. PhD Economics/Finance is far from what undergraduate Economics/Finance looks like. That said, make sure you get very solid letters from your professors. Include only all your excellent writing samples in your application. Give all those programs a try. Search for more programs and apply. I expect you to apply to about 50 programs before the end of April. You may never know which one will work out.

I wish your applications success.

Hi,

Those links I posted are also applicable to you. Meanwhile, please see http://www3.uni-bonn.de/studying/international-students/international-degree-programs/law-economics-and-social-sciences/master-of-science-in-economics. The program is good and its final application deadline is April 30. Also, see http://www.wiwi.uni-konstanz.de/master-economics/how-to-apply/ and http://www.hwr-berlin.de/en/department-of-business-and-economics/study-programmes/international-economics/.

On another note, try Toulouse School of Economics http://www.ecole.tse-fr.eu/en/programs/graduate. In terms of standards, it is as good as the very best schools of Economics in Europe. The tuition cost is, however, ridiculously low.

If all these and more don't work, then focus on your MSc in Naija and implement the strategies we earlier discussed.

If required, I would just take only the relevant undergraduate math courses at a community college and/or a nearby university. I would not go for a full MSc in math/quantitative science. This is exactly what students who wish to upgrade their math skills before going for a PhD in Economics/Finance do in the US.

The relevant undergraduate math courses are: Linear Algebra, Statistical Methods, Calculus, Multivariate Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations(very mild introduction), Real Analysis, and maybe Stochastic Processes, Measure Theory and Probability Theory.

BIGER BOY: But Isn't Latvia was one of these former soviet blocs? I would have prefer western Europe

yes it is a former soviet state. However, it is one of the 3 post soviet countries to become an EU and Schengen member. They are known as the Baltic states. It is also the only baltic state where ease of work and study is possible. Education there is cheap compared to western Europe.

@t22
That's a good suggestion but how do I go about that?
Do I approach a uni and tell them I want to take selected courses? How would a transcript be given? What do you call such programs/courses? Is it an official arrangement nig uni currently offer or would it have to be tailored discussed by me and the uni? And what guarantee the PhD program would accept such supplementary non-degree courses?

Thanks for your help

Fortunately almost all good PhD Economics/Finance programs, especially in the US, are very much aware of this arrangement. It is called a Math Bootcamp.

In all of my correspondences with you, I have assumed that you are far away from the shores of Naija. If this assumption is false, then you may want to neglect the non-degree thingy. I have never heard of such an arrangement in Naija. This does not mean it is impossible though.

Okay, very good suggestion. However, excellent proposal writing tips are all over the internet. Just tailor one of the many samples to suit your research goals/needs. And don't ever forget to reference anything that is not yours. Call this intellectual integrity and you would not be far from the truth. smiley

1. As an undergraduate, force your course advisor to allow you take rigorous math courses with pure math/statistics/physics students. To be truthful to you, all those math for economics courses may not be sufficient.

2. If you missed point one, enrol for an MSc and force your new course advisor to allow you take math courses with undergraduate math students.

3. If you missed points one and two, then you would have to go the self-study route. You need a lot of motivation to succeed here.

4. The math courses should be relevant ones-Calculus, Multivariate Calculus, Linear Algebra, ODE, PDE and Statistical Inference.

5. The most exceptional graduate students of economics known to me had undergraduate degrees in physics, engineering, math, statistics, computer science, math-economics.

6. Graduate students with undergraduate degrees in economics are not failures. In fact, they have better economics intuition.

Depends on what you want to do in Biochemistry, I can see many schools offering something in that field. Biotechnology, Biochemistry,Biochemical engineering etc

For instance click: http://www.study-info.eu/FLDP.aspx?show=proglist&gid=13&fid=6

Find German schools and Finland for instance. Masters is free at those.

Thankfully, @yemmy ma has provided a robust response. I think the deadlines for applications are very near. It is dangerous to apply after the deadlines had passed. Please be as fast as possible.
