Summer is here, and many of us are out of school, with more hours to waste on other things. This would however be a great time to collaborate with other programmers, many of them more experienced and skilled, to not only build a neat application that proves useful not just to developers, but also those out there is Nigeria world.

Please submit ideas you may have and we can vote, and make a decision on which idea is best. Your idea must be unique, and a good one too. Those who submit lame arsed ideas will be snubbed. And no, you cannot use the product from this project for your final year project.
Please open your creative minds and come up with spectacular ideas that we can implement and deploy for use.

Many on here are Computer Scientists at heart, so let the Scientist in you come forth. Bring up those ideas you have.

NO DEBATE ON LANGUAGE OR PLATFORM PLEASE. The languages to be used for the building will be specified(don't bother suggesting any), and those of us who have not had any previous experience, but would like to join can use this as an opportunity to not only get on on read good work, but also learn a new language and skill, at the same time.

Polls is closed

For your Idea of choice, and don't forget to leave a note here indicating why you think we should all invest our time into ensuring the success of the selected application.

If you have other suggestions, do not hesitate to include those here and the poll will be updated accordingly.

PHASE I -- in progress

We have a winner, and we are now working on requirements gathering. Please join us and help us gather requirements for this project.

==========================================================================================================
PHASE II -- Design and Analysis of the Core pieces in Progress

We are currently working on the analysis and design of the core pieces of the Application. Those of you who have design skills, or would like to learn, can jump in at this point and help in the creation process.

Great! A have a few in order of interest:

Idea 1:
A good one will be to work (improve) on this site (Nairaland) -- there is little question that this app needs major work and of course give back to this community, even if it's just the software section alone --
So, what needs to be worked on (patches):
a. UI.
b. Tighter Notification system.
c. Social Media Integration (references, cross-post from FB,or Tw?).
d. Better interaction.

Well, and of course, all that depends on IF the proprietor of the site is willing to bend that way, most likely not but I can dream.

Idea 2:
A social knowledge(QA?) portal with an integrated code review environment (the second half is already solved via many APIs & Librarys, part A is where the challenge is).

Idea 3:
An Afrocentric "Reddit or Digg".

creating APIs for nairaland will be cool tho

Let's please stay away from Nairaland. As developers, there is a vast world out there outside of Nairaland, that I don't see why we should even poke it with any stick we have got working with. If the owners of Nairaland want to change it, they will do it on their own.

Please be less vague. Why would developers spend their time building such and what is there to gain please? Just curious.

Why do we need an Afrocentric "Reddit or Digg". I ask again because I don't even know what Reddit or Digg really does or the value those services add to the lives of those who use 'em, so I am curious as to why I or anyone with spare time would want to invest that in rebuilding what already exists, only so he/she can claim it is more afrocentric.

Come on people. We need great ideas, not your usual 'social networking and not much else' applications or the average computer project subject picked up by students down in nigeria. Imagine you have an opportunity to collaborate with so many other talents, what good idea would you like to explore?

What of GPS sort of application for Android, Blackberry OS and Iphone... To locate nearest hotel, restaurant, supermarket, school, hospital, police station, amusement part etc with direction in Lagos for a start. Build from scratch... Not sort of Google Map or blackberry stuffs. This will be tough but it‘ll really worth it at the end. #justSaying

you made valid points, and this reminds me of GitHub's (and many other service) models, see attached (At the footer of GitHub repo page).

NairaLand is a knowledge portal, it's model is a bit dated but classic, ppl come start a topic, other comment, etc
StackOverflow (and it's siblings) is a knowledge portal, in form of a Q/A with many other interesting subtleties.... : both are trying to solve the knowledge problem and harnessing the wisdom of the crowds.

In Nigeria, there is a huge knowledge gap, not because there aren't ppl with varying knowledge but because there isn't the avenue to tap that "wisdom of the crowd". So this portal (perhaps narrowed to folks with interest in development/software) will be an avenue where folks can collaboratively solve problems, track progress of problems you're contributing to, find mento[r/ee] you you can lead/follow -- two is certainly better than one, and more even better.

It's give folks who don't other have the avenue to insights that might other not have been possible.

Kobojunkie:

Reddit/Digg helps sort relevant stories by people (which poses a serious chicken/egg problem). And the problem that solves is geting relevant news in the mass of news floating around and of course, people create their stories around them. I guess you can see how an Afro-centric one might be different, especially considering the intellectual challenge of coming up with a passable design and sweet algorithms -- it's one of those you solve cause it's interesting.

Apart from the condescending ton of "...down in Nigerian," great ideas are a myth, there is no such thing as a great idea, just an FYI.

Good. Since you have been able to identify already known tools that solve the problems you listed, then there is no need for us to consider them then. I mean we are here to develop something unique, not add to the internet pile of forum sites or knowledge sites. Anyone that needs help with programming can visit the existing sites. Poeple who need mentors can read the millions of blogs from programmers out there and log on to twitter to follow any of em.

We need unique and good ideas. Ideas that will make a difference. Again think, you have developers available to work on something and you choose to develop yet another forum site? undecided There has to be better ideas in that brain . . . shake it and come up with better please.

an app that could predict power faliure?. A browser?. an online catalogue of all goods that is Nigerian, snap and get a description of what it is immediately on your phone or PC?

Kobojunkie: Please provide better description of each idea you present.
power faliure: I suppose if it's possible to accurately predict the weather then its very possible to predict power faliures in Nigeria and am sure that its going to be a valuable information for individuals and companies too.

A browser: will probably promote Nigeria's deteriorating international Image while providing an international advertizing front for local markets.

A database software that serves as an encyclopedia for Nigerian made goods... Updating the database will be open to the public..

Casting my bread upon the waters:

Build a nigerian version of Kickstarter that enables a person raise money for
a) a life threatening condition
b) new startup idea or
c) interesting art/culture project or
d) charitable cause

with pledge tracking, requestor verification and e-payment built in. This can be utilized by the Nairaland Charity (unofficial) or other interested nigerian charities.

What's more==> It has absolutely no commercial value whatsoever but is a labor of love if attempted.

Love this, it can also be extended to make people vote/discuss on issues (perhaps those on the houses) -- a sort of open-governance platform! Brilliant bro!

I just tried to create the poll and I was unable to add more than 6 options. Please explain how this is done. Where is the wiki for polls on here so I can create a good one please.

The subsidy debacle/probe inspired the idea of a budget monotoring app. i started it as a side project but i stopped at the design stage cos other issues came up.

This is my baby, so it's really, really hard letting it out on cyberspace: a 'protean' app, sort of. It basically is an app that reads any format. Eg. Open up the app, load what ever file you have: .jar, .sis, .bar, .apk, .mp4, .pdf, .jpeg, etc. whatever format.
How many billions of lines of code d'ya think that's gonna take?

This is great and i implore some of you not to be myopic in you opinions. we should leave Nairaland out of this and focus on something on something that we need in Nigeria. is there a possibility that we could create a software that will help to solve some of the many issues in Nigeria? let's think...

I actually lunched a parallel campaign in the midst of the subsidy thingy itself -- www.occupy9ja.com & the counterpart twitter hash and names. The idea then was to use the power of social media to push some collective bargaining by the citizens. It turned out after the protest and all, there is more to fixing things than clever looking app/sites, not mention the "God-fathers."

A major huddle that will be crossed here is: can people put their head where their body is (and the obvious problem of is the government information of budget policies open)? Which is the challenge of the aforementioned.

I actually checked out your site during the period. I believe you even started a thread about it.
I also forsee the hurdles you do but i think i have a primitive work around. Taking the FG as case study, We take the budget as it is realeased with the break down e.t.c, we monitor contract awards/spending(MDA) against the announced budget.
Results i forsee
Assuming we start with the 2012 budget, we will have nothing, but starting with the 2013 budget, we should see things that where budgeted for in 2012 and are still budgeted for in 2013....
As for the bolded, I just think an app like this will be useful in 2019 i.e more of a long term thing
If well developed and publicised, more and more people will be interested in the budget/government spending which will make it harder to execute the same project in 2 consecutive years.
