Come And Eat: Is It For Formality Or Do You Mean It. by Babewensabi: 10:54pm On Jun 13, 2012
I got this from a friend's post. This happened in school. A guy decided to visit a friend in the females hostel, he meant her absence and decided to wait, the friend's roommate who was about to eat called him 'come chop' the guy who was very hungry quickly positioned himself and 'downloaded' the meal. She later confessed to her friends saying ' see me see wahala o I just called him out of courtesy o see as the guy finished my food'. The question: was the babe right to invite him when she knows she has no intention of giving him the meal? What do you think to invite or not invite? 'Come chop na bad thing?'

lol

Most times 'come and eat' is said for courtesy sake. Cuz if you are in a room full of people and you are in a corner eating all alone, it appears very selfish, especially in Igbo culture.

It doesn't mean the room full of people should go attacking the one plate of food, cuz for most people 'come and eat' is just a habit they've been brought up with and gotten used to, and nothing more.

A person who really wants you to come and eat would get you an extra plate of food or something, if she doesn't do something like that, then she expects a 'no thank you' most of the time.

@breathing, I feel it's not proper to invite when you are expecting a 'no thank you'.

@babewensabi: sure its not proper. I dont invite people, especially people that look very hungry, except i've really got food for them.

Just saying that some peeps do it out of habit, even before they realise what they just did. They were brought up like that.

So the invited should atleast try to consider the size of the food b4 running along to indulge his longthroat.

I don't invite anyone, I usually use the french style which is to "tell you that I'm eating" . . . What you do with the information is entirely up to you.

Formality. I don't say it though and I barely hear it around here.

I don't even like it when someone stares at my food, talkless of eating from my plate. Gross.

one of the formalities and nuances in nigerian culture which needs to be modified.

come and eat doesnt mean nothing has been added to the "food" oh.

lord have mercy.

gone are the days when come and eat was an invitation made with a genuine desire to simply share a tasty meal and nothing more.

It's a formality for majority of NIgerians. If i tell you to come and eat, you're supposed to say "NO, thank you" and then i'll begin to enjoy my meal alone. But if you stand up and carry spoon then you've broken the code 101 of the "Come and Eat" best practice.
