Bauchi — The Bauchi State government yesterday sacked 194 striking senior lecturers of the College of Education, Azare in Katagum Local Government Area of the state.

Chairman of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) of the institution, Sunusi Chinade, who spoke to newsmen, said the Governing Council of the institution terminated the appointment of the 194 staff.

"Among those sacked were 76 Masters degree holders, three PHD holders out of four in the institution,16 Heads of Departments out of 28, four deans out of six and 27 senior lecturers out of the 40 in the college", he said.

In an interview, Provost of the college, Dr Garba Ibrahim, said the teachers appointments were terminated because of new arrangements and changes by the Governing Council.

Dr Ibrahim said the college will make alternative arrangements before students of the college resume.

The staff union embarked on an indefinite strike over the re-appointment of the registrar of the college, Aliyu B Shehu, for another five years, accusing of him of bad administration and misappropriation of public funds. It was gathered that the state government directed them to suspend their strike action, and when that did not work, it asked members of the union who are willing to work to indicate their interest in writing.

This very absurd, that is infringing on people's rights. Whatever happens to saying that majority carries the vote. You just can't pick up a bastard and impose him on people of class. I thought that most higher institutions have the autonomy to appoint whoever they deem fit. That is what you get when you have a tout as a governor. Nonsense.

The academic unions in Nigeria have abused their power to strike. It is within the powers of the state government to appoint the management of an institution it owns and funds. For the academic staff to go on an indefinite strike over that is irresponsibility and is tantamount to blackmail. The governing council acted right to fire them for dereliction of duty.

If academics disagree on the a decision of the governing council of the institution, why cant they challenge it in court like civilized people who pride themselves as learned folks. Why disrupt the academic calendar of the institution and learning environment for students? On what justifiable ground was this strike? Did the college violate a labor agreement?

Why abandon your duty posts because you disagree with those your employers appointed to run your firm. Can anyone of you supporting the lecturers even attempt to do what they did with your own employers?

The problem is not to sack them but to find their replacements. Who is willing to commit suicide? Then government should have tackled the corruption allegation first. Corruption have been legalized in Nigeria.

Going to court is a waste of time because the judges are corrupt and take orders from the state. Besides, a case could suffer delay that even the plaintiff would regret going to court.

And what special thing did the corpers do that you except the governor to go and thank them? For what?
Focus on the subject matter.

What those idiots should be interested on is their paycheck and not who is the registrar. if you don't like the Aliyu just look for another job or start your own business.
