the whole school is covered by wireless network and unn is known for research like in the department i grad from, library and info sci, we mostly do assignments and main exams. so it is expedient that every student gets a laptop but the price is too much.

This issue has obviously lingered. UNN belongs to the Fed. Govt.; let them intervene.

Let me summarise: UNN VC, simply known as Dr. Ozumba compelled all the newly admitted students of UNN to pay 70,000 naira as Laptop Fee which the school will supply. The fee has caused a lot of hardship in the new intakes as it escalated the school fees to 170,000 naira.

Acceptance fee: 25,000
School fees: 60 - 65,000
Laptop fee: 70,000
Accommodation: 10,000(boys) 11,000(girls)

Total: 165,000 - 171,000

The students have expressed their discomfort with this to no avail. They are of the view that some have laptops already, some say that they can get a nice Laptop with just 40,000. Yet the case the case still remains "No laptop fee, no clearance in UNN"

The SUG on their own have not done a thing concrete to reverse this. That's the summary of the status quo in UNN now.

Here are some screenshots:

The worst part is that the laptop will not be delivered or sub standard

70k for laptop. Let's see the kind of laptop the school will give them. Something tells me it will be one refurbished problematic unwanted machine from China. Something that should not even be sold for 30k.

Well, this is done even in Institutions in the US for example, it's just given a different name...like Technology fee....But this is for maintenance of computer labs that students use for their coursework and have access to anytime! But i guess in UNN's case they actually purchase the laptops for the students?
Hear yourself! You get what you pay for in the States. This is not so in Nigeria. The policy is just one of the numerous tactics of extortion. In your example, the contributive fees you paid are toward maintaining infrastructures. And if you're asked to pay for a gadget, you can be sure you'll get it cheaper buying it through your school than buying it in the market on your own. And most important of all, you're not FORCED to buy the gadget from the school. But in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. If they want to increase school fees, let them be transparent about it instead of this ridiculous extortionate tactic.

My alma mater, I remember back then when men were still undergraduates, UNN school fees use to be at par with other federal universities. But the reverse is the case now.

It's getting to the level where the child of a poor parent won't be able to afford the school fees of federal universities.

In UNIBEN their school fees was incresed from 7700 to 8100, it was not easy for the school authority. then someone will add compulsery laptop and SUG will keep quite. come to think of it, do your guys really need the SUG to lead a protest against this?

Really that my alma mater is one kind of hell. There are unspeakable intimidations from lecturers and no students welfare. Check Franco ( male hostels) u will just weep for the sons of men. I don't doubt this news, its very possible in UNN.

I think it's right to enforce laptops on every undergrad and graduate students...this is an age where everybody should be proficient in using computers. Besides, if u school abroad, most times materials are given in soft copies. Even here in Nigeria, many lecturers have started issuing soft copy of materials and there are tons of additional reading materials on d Web.

What I disagree with is the price they're billing for it...#70k is too much for what u can class as a student/low end laptop. There are laptops of 50-55k and even 11 inch netbooks for as low as 40k and these would serve equally well for academic purposes. #70k is nothing but a rip off and I can bet what they'll give the students for that price won't have market value that's above #55k.

What happens if an individual already owns a laptop?lipsrsealed They should av just asked everybody to come with their laptops...hmm, naija.

It is not the university's to mandate the purchase laptops. It is their responsibility to provide hundreds/thousands of computers for its students.

i commend the school for encouraging the students towards an intellectual future. i recommend the school list reasonable minimum requirements as some have better systems than what a 70k system could give and getting extra would be a waste.

The SUG should do something about it,unless he has been compromised..if I recall vividly, the former vice chancellor in my time Bartho okolo who succeeded Prof Nebo osita, tried hiking the school fees.it resulted to a protest and shut down...but at last, the students won...but tnx to the SUG president then, even though he faced sanction...UNN's VC should better take his time o,before what happened to Mbanefo,Bartho okolo would repeat itself

UNN 's SUG are nothing but bootlickers and puppets.

UNN VC will soon add modem and subcription fees so that office will start. Nonsense VC
they are already paying that in UNN, the skul provides WIFI and the students pay 12k per session, that was then, I heard there is also a hike in subscription now,and the worst is that it is compulsory, whether u own a laptop or not. I guess that's the reason the fool wants to enforce the freshers to pay that "fine" of a fee. Even when they know that 80% of the students uses it for social networks, why making money from the students? Probe ooooo,I trust Bubu on this, just a body language and everything will be normalised. grin

Computing systems are so essential to students to be able to join the global network of the academia, rather than get isolated in a rural den.
So the VC might have a point, but a very poor and awfully thought out solution.

Compelling students to outrightly buy laptops at N70,000 is rather draconian, defeats the whole aim of qualitative education since it uproots the process by denying many basic access.

Let me suggest to him that a lot of social investment by companies go into education, so why not tap into the wealth of UNN Alumini spread across the length and breath of the country to provide tablets (not laptops) to freshmen free of charge. Even the UNN Alumini organisation with its membership fees and donations can easily provide tablets for about 2000 freshmen annually at N30,000 each. That's a paltry N60 million naira. The SUG rather than cause interruptions should link up to the many UNN graduates to get annual 5 to 10 years funding commitment from oil companies to provide tablets to freshmen. At least you guys should put the many dumb brained and pauper fraternities to their proper use rather than killing each other like monkeys every few years. Fraternity (fraternisation) is suppose to link you to the up/successful. not teach you armed robbery and how to smoke heroine. Infact, the so called fraternities should scout funds to donate tablets to freshmen. Among sane people these are the kinds of projects that fraternity leaders pursue and they put them on CVs as achievements, Legitimizing their organisation with activities that build the society.

I schooled somewhere where Chevron paid for my IPad.

This was suppose to help student academically and make UNN meet up with schools internationally but the price is too much for this, there are other ways of going about it

You are right. It will surely help the students academically and help the country as a whole in the long run too.

The price of the laptops might look exorbitant at this time so what I suggest the school authority should do is to repeat what Professor Chinedu Nebo did as the VC then when he was increased the school fees by also introducing installment payment.

That way, the students and their sponsors can easily cope with the price of the laptop.

This country really needs to move forward technologically.
