Pls MTN subscribers be vigilant because MTN is already sending and imposing contents while deducting some amount of money from subscribers. Perhaps this may be there next move to make up for the fine .My Mother in Law was charged some amount of money on the content she did not subscribe for and all attempts to reach there customers care failed.

The massive migration is because they have refused to make the SE attractive for business. Everyone who graduates moves away because there are no jobs.

Nnamdi is trusted because he will not take bribes like uwazurike. His methods are harsh, but Nigeria is not sane and doesn't respect democracy.

A lot of us are just crazy about the fine that MTN should pay but have quickly forgotten that this same company is putting food on the table of over 10,000 Nigerian citizens. We are quick to criticise but fail to analyse the ripple effect afterwards. In a country where unemployment is at its explosion stage and we are insisting that a company that has helped reduced unemployment rate and increased the standard of living of the Nigerian citizens to pay fine that is as much as some countries Budget. How many companies in Nigeria can pay that fine and still able to operate. Oil companies have been spilling oil and depleting our Ozone layer with flared Gas and they have never been fined this much. What will happen if MTN decides to pack and leave Nigeria today, will NCC or Federal Government employ the over 10,000 Nigerians that will lose their Job. We need to also remember that it is Nigerian citizens that are also working for them here not South Africans. A word is enough for the wise.

I think the new law was set up to catch more specifically MTN, the regulator knew mtn wont be able to register all their sims within 6 months. I can bet you other networks are probably laughing and enjoying this drama which they might benefit out of it, and i dont buy it that other networks complied, they were as guilty as MTN, but since they were not targeted, they are okay even if they were as guilty as mtn.

they should pay the fine in full o! if they want to leave let them leave, others will take their place but we know and they know they can't afford the leave their biggest market.

They should suck it up and behave themselves in future.

you break the law you pay, BP, Volkswagen, it's the same all over the world it's only here that we negotiate and get sentimental. The fine is punitive for a reason, if you keep negotiating down fines, every company then feels they can break the law and negotiate with us, then companies start making decisions based on financial opportunity/ fine as opposed to compliance with the law.

excessive fines (for those who feel it's excessive) are meant to discourage reckless behaviour thats why in law there is something called punitive damages.

Its amazing how you are quick to point out other incidents of fine , however do enlighten me how much did Shell pay again as fine for the oil spill which destroyed nearly an entire community ? , and again how did the oil spillage clean up operation went? . The amount of hate exerted towards SA company is just staggering.

From the quote attributed to the new Communications Minister, he may not be firm on the fine imposed on MTN. MTN Executives are aware of their perceive 'too big to fail' stance. Mr Shittu should not have said, we don't want them to leave". MTN may play hard ball or victim after the deadline.

you just read Nigeria is mtns largest market , and account for 37% of the mtn groups revenue...so I ask you again ... who needs mtn
the problem is that you all don't know the potential of this country. within 2 months(if mtn leaves naija) airtel, etisalat and glo will upgrade to absorb more users and I bet a new foreign telecoms firm will invest in naija.

haven't you asked yourself why MTN disobeyed the directive and ignored the memos/warnings from NCC? because they felt ABOVE THE NIGERIAN LAW. imagine that!

also I can guarantee you that south Africa needs naija more than naija needs south Africa that is why their govt is being silent and backing the naija govts actions whilst urging us to tender justice with mercy.

if we pursue shop rite, Oracle , stanbic, mtn , dstv etc what economic retaliation can s/a do how many. naija companies Dey shine for S/A??

Did you just say "any foreign telecoms firm will invest in nigeria". you probably lack business knowledge, who would risk his cash and put it in a country where other network was fined $5.2bn, no network will set foot in that environment, none.
Re: Nigeria Does Not Want MTN “to Die” From $5.2bn Fine-Communications Minister by Nobody: 8:48am On Nov 14, 2015
MTN actually fined themselves. They had about 5.2 million lines that were not disconnected after the NCC gave all phone networks a deadline. The penalty which they knew was plainly stated to be $1000 per line, so do the maths. MTN must pay the fine to serve as a deterrent to most foreign companies operating in Nigeria especially south African, cause they all take Nigerians for granted and carry out all sorts of abuses because back then they knew that government ,regulating bodies and our laws are weak and can be safely subverted.

Strong institutions that punish law breakers no matter who they are is what clearly differentiates underdeveloped nations from advanced ones. When individuals or companies know that there is a 99.9% chance that theyll be caught and severely punished when they break the laws of the land, everybody automatically falls in line and do the right thing without any form of supervision. If MTN is let off the hook in any form then we are all back to square one.

The same hatred cannot be leveled against etisalat, airtel, shell, guiness, coca cola, and other foreign companies. Why SA companies? envy and jealousy its the cause. Most nigerians wish those companies were local and there is this believe "if south africa could build this organisations, so could us" All we hear everyday is "mtn is deducting my airtime" "Dstv is milking nigeria dry with their exorbitant charges"

Question one, why does mtn has 62m customers in nigeria? it shows that they are doing some thing good compare to other networks.

DStv prices are the same thru out Africa, and there is no "pay per view" in South Africa. DStv is a luxury not a nercesity. We cant all be driving BMW. Why chinese owned Startimes does not experience the hatred similar to what Dstv experiences. In SA, those who cannot afford dstv dont complain because it does not impact in their lives, they consider it as luxury just like going to the movies. if you dont have money to the movies, you dont go.

Nigerians have this tendency of entitlement towards South African companies. It seems people want them to give services for free, same treatment is not directed to US, British, France companies. you wonder why?

Why do you say "especially south african" why it seems there is more than meets the eye here. There are indian and chinese companies that are ill-treating their workers and paying them peanuts, just beacuse they are not South african, they can get away with it.

it depends on where, In Nigeria probably nothing which is why those communities are devastated, In other countries, they were probably fined heavily, paid for cleanup and paid compensation to those whose livelihood were destroyed.

That's the point, the reason why we are in such a mess as a country is that people/companies have gotten away with murder, we say no more!! Saying that because shell did not pay compensation is like saying because people got away with corruption and looting public funds in the past we should continue to allow it

BTW there is no statute of limitations, Sunny Ade just won a N500m award for a copy right case he instituted and has been fighting since 1975. When we start to show some seriousness, we can decide at any time to revisit the oil spill. Shell is a going concern, the offences haven't gone away.

Are you guys brain-dead MTN imposed the fine on themselves!!! NCC did not wake up in the morning and pull that figure out of their a..!
for every unregistered line that all networks fail to disconnect from their network after the given deadline attracts a punitive fine of $1000. MTN like they always do told NCC to go to hell and still kept 5.2 million unregistered lines on their network. 5,200,000 x 1000= 5,200,000,000.

If MTN was operating in the US and the Homeland Security Agency gives them that directive, they would have disconnected every unregistered line 2 days before the deadline. This should be used to send a clear message to all companies providing services to the Nigerian public that it's no more business as usual. If they feel they are too big to obey the laws of our land then let them get the hell out!

I have followed this issue like my existence depends on it and I've realised that most of the people applauding the fine and cursing MTN to pay are from a 'particular' tribe in Nigeria.
I need to know the names of those NCC guys that are really after S.A's interest, obedience to Law my asssss.
I am sure many u registered glo, Etisalat and and Airtel lines violated too, even till today, why pick on only mtn?
I repeat, mtn needs to do an internal investigation in Nigeria and heads should roll.
I pity any Foreigner that would bring their investments to Nigeria.
I smell sabotage.

Hmmmmm

Their deviant and disrespectful of the government order is condemned, they should be punished.

But you will see at the end of the day, the government will reduce it for them. The fine is so so much.

Or maybe they will be allowed to pay it over a period of many many years (long time).
