The stakes
Group C winners Germany go into the Round of 16 full of confidence following two wins and a draw in the group stage. The squad, who had only a few days to work together before the tournament began, have developed a wonderful team spirit and have the belief they can make it all the way to the final. The Nigerians, meanwhile, barely scraped through to the knockout stages after picking up just three points to finish third in their group. Following defeats in their first two matches, only a 5-0 thrashing of Tahiti in their final Group B game was enough to keep Samson Siasia’s side in the competition

The stat
0 – Germany’s record against Nigeria at FIFA youth tournaments is anything but promising. At U-20 level, the Germans went down 2-0 to the then tournament hosts in 1999, while at U-17 level the African powerhouses ran out 2-0 winners in the 1985 final and were 3-1 semi-final victors in the 2007 showpiece.

The birthday
Nigeria’s King Osanga will be celebrating his 19th birthday the day before the match. The striker played every minute of Nigeria’s three group stage matches.

The words
“At this stage we need to be prepared to face anyone, so I don’t mind who we get. We’ve already played one African team and that will be an advantage against Nigeria. We’re back in Suez which is good because the best facilities for our preparations are there. We said from the start that every match is like a final and we’re looking forward to taking part in the knockout stages,” Horst Hrubesch, Germany coach.

“We’re expecting a tough game against Germany. The knockout stages are always different to the group stages. Of course we have a lot of respect for Germany. They’ve already demonstrated what a quality team they are and I’m sure they’re going to be very confident going into the match. I hope my team performs to the best of their ability,” Samson Siasia, Nigeria coach.
