Gbam!

I had the chance to go to a private university (Covenant precisely), but I went ahead with UNIBEN instead and today I am regretting my decision.

Nigeria needs technical , creative arts and tools schools more than private and university schools combined. But as useless as our government is, they still kept approving more useless universities for their selfish interests.
The truth is we need technology revolutions. But sad enough no one is thinking on that. Religions and political nonsense have taking over our youths thinking.
That's why you see a Lebanese man, who hardly know how to speak good English , that just attended one unaccredited technical school in Beirut coming to Ado ekiti to win contracts over anyone here and will now employ so called our graduates and pay them peanuts. Yes , am talking from experience, because I know a guy when he came from Lebanon hardly feed his family , won a contract of 200million . His commission was around 10% and he contracted the job out for another firm. I don't know the detail of the contact, but I know that this country educational system is totally bullshit and the idiots are busy doing twitter war. Arrant nonsense.
In reality, no university is whot it in Nigeria. Privates are too expensive for common man that have potential while public are too rugged for many chaps to cope with considering the stress and the challenges surrounding the schools. No thanks to the thiefing politicians and pastorprenurs. Only individual strive can make the difference either you attend private or public university.
Thumbs up.....

Public universities are far better a lot of these so called private schools. Only private schools like Covenant University, American University and Igbinedion University are the only private schools to write home about. The school I graduated from in Nigeria is nothing to write home about. I'm currently suing them for trying to incompetence, negligence and ineptitude. I graduated in 2014. That same year I was cleared and mobilized for Nysc and equally had my results approved by the school's senate committee. I rounded off my service in 2015 only to come back in 2016 to request for my transcript and I was told that I was having 10 carryovers. As we speak the matter is in court.

When I start hiring, if I have to hire someone with a degree because of insurance/etc then it'll be from a university that was in existence in the old western states. Otherwise, I'll hire from other African countries.

I refuse elitism.

it'll be from a university that was in existence in the old western states.
that in itself is a form of elitism

but more to the point, universities like CU are providing the first generation universities with competition, and i'm not sure those schools can meet up.

the old format was pass through university, get a 2.1, learn the skills on the job

the top notch private universities teach the skills and give the 2.1. so their grads have a distinct advantage. its easier for me if i have people coming in who already know how to use CAD applications etal. training them or delegating to them is easy.

i cannot say if they are now using autocad proper in our institutions or if some silly old codgers are still flexing with tsquares and drawing boards. i cannot say if computer science students are actually being taught C++, C# etal, or if they are still being taught dead languages like pascal \fortran without computers.

Wait to u ever think any private university will want any FG university to be developed in any form. No..! Cause it bad for business, we using outdated scheme of works, unqualified profs and lecturers yet we have monkeys making way with million s same with snakes, pls if the government invest money in federal university, it bad business for private universities, should that happen private universities will drop their standards real low again, hence, all these ones making noise on twitter won't have the liver or even dream about saying private uni are better than FG uni. I am also not concluding that private uni sucks. They just arnt as good as good as they think, cause if the government interfere and improve it universities facilities. They would be on diff levels.

Anyways those that will make it, will make it.
oya now tha federal govt no send dia schools nko

You can imagine the level of ignorant and mental slow we as a people are.
Wait a minute, we actually flood the social medium (obviously built by a school drop-out) to showcase our stupidity? This is so embarrassing.
What is the difference between a private university and a public university graduate in Nigeria? Obviously nothing for as long as am concern, both are products of an expired education system as practiced in Nigeria.
We have a lot of civil, mechanical, electrical engineers, yet no single engineering project can be said to be executed in the country (except of course the mediocre type of projects)
A country in which computer science students are only thought how to use a particular software like Microsoft office, and at most web designing.

In some ways you are right. If public universities improve radically without raising fees and then decide to expand access then many private universities would simply suffer as patronage would drop sharply.

Or

If public universities improve radically can never happen
they are in a death spiral and fowl yansh about to blow like govt secondary schools

without expanding access nor raising fees
hahahahahahahaha
you so cute
then private universities would enjoy patronage but from less qualified candidates..

However a few private universities can still thrive even with excellent cheap public universities existing and their selling point would be a good PRESTIGE. Any private university that is sensible enough should start working on its reputation by carving out a niche and becoming excellent in it now, so that when public universities start becoming better it won't ruin them.

I believe Covenant is already prestigious, Pan Atlantic and ABUAD are also on course to have a distinct identity. Igbinedion and Madonna have sadly lost out despite having huge advantages as the First generation of private universities.

Human beings and the need to feel superior.

If you didn't graduate from Harvard, MIT, Cambridge or any of the top global universities, I don't really see a need to brag.

The rest of us got the same level of "Normal education"

Exactly!! The thought of "suing" came to your mind because it is a private university. Your first year school fees alone is a full schorlarship for public univ.Students. Who born you to even THINK of suing in a government school. Your future is already at risk. My dear, Private is better by far. Forget the money! Na God dey provide.

The truth is CU teaches the basibs of the skills and leave you to earn the 2.1. It is wrong to say they give 2.1 cos they don't do that in anyway.
One advantage of CU is speedy adaptation.
In 2004, the architecture student were made to adopt CAD and drop most of their drawing board stuff.
Same thing applied to the engineering student around that time also.

I'm not forgetting anything. I know how my father paid my fees. A school where I paid 2.5m naira in 5yrs is what you want me to forget? My future can never be at risk cos whatever I've been destined for I'll certainly be. Imagine after spending 5yrs and paying such an outrageous sum, only to come back for my transcript the school started telling me I was having 12 carryovers. Even when I've finished serving.

I chose to go to public university cause i don't want a situation where i would want something/a gadget and daddy would say i should consider the fee he paid for a private education. Since its public,i get my things in no time. That's my ONLY advantage. As for the freedom enjoyed in public univ. That's just crap. I'm an indoor person and going out is not really my style. So, i see NOTHING really amusing in public universities. Just hustle and bussle. Noise and gist. Private is better.

Private/Public university can not make a dullard a genius in 4 years. If you are not smart, you're not!

It all boils down to the individual.

I graduated from a Public University, but I can defend my piece of paper (certificate) anywhere in the world.
Hardwork, discipline and self development is key.
.
.
.
P.S: Let's not argue about private/public Nigerian universities please. Nigerian Public Universities are a monumental failure in the history of tertiary Education.
Also, some private universities should cease to operate.

CU is a leading institution, I must admit. Only if they could widen their faculties for more disciplines.

really? Have you had such an experience before? They've been over 20 of such cases in the school. The school even went as far as accusing me of burying courses. How did someone with 12 carryovers graduate and yet the department, college, exams and records and even senate that approved the results didn't notice any anomaly? How was I mobilised for service, given final clearance, get a call-up letter/number, a statement of result and even had my results approved by the senate? These are some of the many questions begging for answers. This was a school I paid about 2.5m in 5yrs.

I get your point. I'm just saying "THE THOUGHT OF SUING THE UNIVERSITY CAME TO MIND BECAUSE IT IS A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY" You have the right to sue considering the amount of school fees you paid. BUT, do you know a public university student having the same issue as you CAN DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This is one advantage of private universities. You can voice out your frustrations and problems and THE SCHOOL HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO LISTEN.

they won't widen their faculty to accommodate more courses, instead they church created Landmark Uni and made it focus on agriculture. If you study both schools very well, you will realize that as expensive as they are, they are still being heavily subsidized.

CU is being cautious about expanding faculties so that the quality of those programs would not erode. The emphasis I believe right now is toughening up the Engineering faculty by building two centers of excellence in engineering and a Technology Hub for its computer science/engineering. But in the nearest future they would expand into other faculties.
