Is it right and safe to reveal the fact that you are an atheist especially if you are student on campus or looking for job? I feel that as a student, staffs in the university might want to put you in a difficult position(reduce your mark, increase your carry overs or extend the duration of your post graduate programme) so that you can be frustrated and "see that without god, you can't be anything in life". During job interviews, it seems that selection is influenced by religious bias ie. A religious boss favours a religious candidate.

General it seems when you are atheist and outspoken about it and you are doing well in life, religious people that you are better than (especially those who are destitute and can only dream of what you have) seem to want you downfall or would try to bring your downfall - - - - all to prove life would be hard without god.

So is it right to reveal your atheism when you are a student on campus or when you have a religious supervisor in your doctorate programme ? Is it right when job hunting? In fact when and in what scenario should one keep a low profile about one's atheism?

No one has the right to deny you of what belongs to you irrespective of your religious beliefs.

I know but some people do deprive others of their right and get away with it. I such a case, there is nothing one can do eg. If a lecturer purposely fail you here in Nigeria, there is nothing you can do.

lol don't think that way. You heard about the scandal of the lecturer that sexually abused a student and was dismissed. Look, don't undermine the power of social media, if you have any lecturer that is disturbing your life, take his matter online and see how things work together for good

It's a lose-lose situation. The girl had a device that caught the lecturer soliciting for sex. In the exam hall, there are no telephone devices allowed that will enable you to compare what you wrote in the examination and the script they will release if you sue them. Even if you did, they could suspend you for bringing phone to the examination hall. If you nailed the lecturer successfully, his friends will frustrate you. cry

Do not reveal your atheism to any religious person who you might be at their mercy especially in an ultrareligious society

They might not have the legal right but they do have the right to deny you while being reticent of the reason or state another reason

Expect a level of free thought from someone before you disclose some of your beliefs or unbelief.

Be looking for it. Anyway, per your topic, whether you are religious or not, opposition must arise. You can't escape it. Stop your crucification of religious people.

Lol. You are still living in the matrix(religious delusion). The agent smiths(Adeboye, Oyedepo, Olukoya etc.) are not your friend. Be an atheist and enjoy life.

Do you mind the kid? grin cheesy

He is trying to pass the blame to another and fixate on it as if his case is unique and isolated to him and his atheism.

People face opposition every day everywhere.

1) Educational opposition

2) Societal opposition

3) Religious opposition

4) Financial opposition

In fact there is no area of life without opposition.

I wonder why religious people do not hide their religious convictions even in the face of opposition but would rather die than deny their conviction. Makes me wonder as I reverse his lame pity gathering attempt, if he thinks a religious person would hide his beliefs if his academic wellbeing is in the hand of an atheist.

What a silly thread fully decorated with cowardly atheists with no strength of value and strength in their conviction.

**spits** and walks out.

I can see your fears keep compounding everyday. Now its atheism vs academic excellence in the face of religious opposition.

Your torment is still gathering momentum. This is just a small token of many more to come and one lamentation out of many more to come.

I am looking forward to reading about More of your torment grin. It would be fun.

I don't see the importance of such revelation

Why exactly is it important for the lecturer to know you are an atheist?

Career-wise, has the revelation of your atheism been detrimental?

I never meant one would reveal one's atheism to the lecturer instead I was referring to the event where one is out spoken and the lecturer gets to hear.

Nope. There have been no way my atheism have ever being detrimental to my progress or wellbeing.

I'm quite independent financially.

For my social life, I have been quite open about my unbelief when asked.

Almost everyone who knows me, family, friends, girl friend, peers. Knows I'm an atheist.

Sometimes I feel that some outspokenness are misplaced and unnecessary.

If there is ethnic tension in Nigeria and I'm Igbo living in the North, I won't be so quick to let anyone know I'm Igbo

Right and safe? Funny. Right and safe according to what, I wonder. A God, perhaps?

I have a rule, "Never tell lies, buda". If I feel the need to lie to anyone, it's either because I'm afraid of that person, or I wish to exploit that person. Unfortunately, or fortunately, if I lie to a person, I compound my fear by also fearing I'd be found out, so it's not worth the "double afraid". And I just happen to be content with what I have so I have no need to exploit anyone. By the way, if I did feel the need to exploit people, I'd become a preacher!

I sometimes go to a church I've been going to for 15 years now and I am very well known for being an atheist as I would tell anyone who asks. It is Church of England, with a majority Nigerian congregation, but people know not to come talk to me about converting from my atheism. Perhaps that's because I don't go about cursing their God so they don't come and curse me with my no-god.

I started going to understand Nigerians and their religious language as I missed it all growing up. From my writings, you'd know I can speak it somewhat, but if you ask, you'd know I am an atheist, and it's not unusual for those who know me well to tell those who don't, that I am. I got to say, they are all decent people and love me dearly. But I expect that if I go about hating and cursing their God, I would reap exactly the same hatred and cursing that I sow.

But, I live in a liberal society where discriminations of that sort are frowned upon. Besides, CoE preaches "Love", and you don't get to choose your neighbours in a multicultural society.

When I go home to the Orolu Kingdom, I go to church, I go to the mosque, I go to the Owala shrine to worship Owala (we kill a white goat, cook and eat), and I join in in worshipping Obatala and Ogun (though I don't partake of dog eating because the local dogs they kill eat poo!). They all know I don't believe in what we worship but they find it commendable that I would join in with them. I do tell them that I am Omo Oba Orun, so can't take sides, and they understand, especially when amongst the books I give to the library are Qurans and Bibles.

If I lived in a society full of bigots, I would behave as the steward who's boss told him to come and give account and so went to his debtors and asked them all to pay half of what they owed. If my school grades had depended on it, I strongly believe I'd have lied and gotten my grades. After all, I am an atheist, without a god to feel the need to die or sacrifice my future for. However, I doubt I'd enjoy the company I'd get to keep from my having lied so most likely wouldn't put myself in that sort of position to begin with. And you'd have to wonder why I would go to a school or work in a place where my religious beliefs matter, and not how well I do my job or perform in the exams!

My point is, my regard for myself and the arrogant fuq that I am mean I get to tell the truth and damn the consequences. But I manage that by not being a prick to those who worship gods. Idiots excepted, of course.

You mean like when one is being a prick, right? Trust me, not many go through their offline lifes being the pricks they are on here. If one is such a prick to one's lecturer's or boss' god, my advice is, changed schools or jobs immediately and moderate your prickiness in future!

HA.
ERROR MOVE.

YOU'LL LOSE YOUR GIRLFRIEND JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T FOLLOW HER TO CHURCH, YOU'LL LOSE THE RESPECT OF SOME RELATIVES JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T BELIEVE WE ALL DESCENDENTS OF ADAM..

AND YOU WANT TO GO AND PROCLAIM YOUR DISBELIEF WHILE JOB SEARCHING, IN A COUNTRY WHERE MAJORITY HAS A FIRST CLASS DEGREE IN RELIGION AND SUPERSTITION?
THEY'LL JUST SWEEP YOU AWAY FROM THE VICINITY WITHOUT WASTE OF TIME.

HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO KEEP ALL THESE PEOPLE CLOSE?

HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO LET THEM KNOW THAT FREETHINKING IS NOT INSANITY?

Atheism and hypocrisy are five and six. If you can't die for what you believe in, you ain't living.

The will come online and deceive people and yet they are not living the life they profess offline.

Hmm. Africa isn't ready for radical outspoken atheism. Go to Egypt and be outspoken about you being an atheist, you will know hell and harassment. Some parts of Nigeria are like that. Unlike you christians, we don't have an afterlife and a reward from a divine being if we die or suffer for being atheists. This life is it, we only live once and we want to enjoy life and avoid troubles that aren't worth it.
