EFFECTS OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGN POSTERS ON ELECTION RESULTS

Why do parties and candidates spend money on poster campaigns in national elections?

Posters are seen as ‘exceptionally important’ by a significant number of political consul-
tants worldwide.

Many candidates and
political parties do not have access to the media and must rely on posters to publicize their
campaign and reach out to the electorate.

Our observation shows that poster advertising is the most important’ item on the campaign budget of most political parties and politicians in Nigeria and globally.

Political parties and politicians will do every thing to ensure that its posters sustain daily presence in the streets, especially during electioneering period and season.

Street observations and
testimonials from party workers point out that the poster displays of one party rarely
go unchallenged. Usually the opposition will swiftly react either by a separate display of its own, or by putting its own posters on top, only for the process to start anew the
next day.

Maintaining the daily visible presence of one’s posters therefore requires constantly diverting resources from other activities (e.g. canvassing, mailing, calling, etc.),
and the party’s ability to sustain this effort is key in deciding their poster strategy.

The decision on how much to
invest in posters depends on how much time a party or candidate want to last and what impact they want to make.

Posters are one of the most resilient and sustained campaign strategy deployed by politicians in Nigeria and globally to woo voters for their votes during electioneering campaign.

Political parties and politicians use the poster platform to signal their governing credentials and ability to win
through visual cues.

Poster campaigns are intended to signal a party’s electoral strength.

Poster as the major tool of election campaign is used to announce to the electorate and voters the choice candidate of each political party and their manifestoes.

Political electioneering campaign posters are used at both primary elections to elect candidates that will represent their parties at the general elections at local council elections, state house of assembly elections, governorship elections, house of representative election, senatorial elections and the presidential elections in Nigeria and other countries where democracy is being practiced as a system of government.

Over the years, poster advertising has become synonymous to election campaign globally. Nigeria is not leftout in this. As we prepare for the 2023 elections in Nigeria, as the campaigns are equally gaining momentum, we explore all our politicians and political parties to paste their posters in a decent manner that will not deface our environment and the interest of rival parties. Every politician and political party should be given a level playing ground to project their candidates and interest through poster advertising.

2023: INEC releases guidelines for campaigns

2023: INEC releases guidelines for campaigns

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kwara has issued the guidelines on the commencement of campaigns for the 2023 general election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Malam Garba Attahiru, announced this on Monday in Ilorin during a stakeholders meeting.

Attahiru, who was represented by the INEC Administrative Secretary, Mr Julius Yagba, said that 14 activities have been successfully implemented, as INEC published the final list of nominated candidates on Sept. 20, 2022.

He said the next activity in line is the commencement of campaigns by the political parties on Sept. 28.

He added that the meeting was designed to remind all stakeholders about the responsibilities and expectations during the campaigns for various offices.

According to him, campaign for the offices of the President and National Assembly campaigns will start on Sept. 28, and the Governorship and State House of Assembly is on Oct.12.

“Relying on Section 92 of the Electoral Act, 2022, the commission expects the political campaigns to be civil, devoid of abusive language and without any rancour.

“Section 92 of the Electoral Act 2022 forbids any political campaign or slogan tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly or one likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.

“Therefore abusive, intemperate, slanderous or base language or insinuations or innuendoes intended or iikely to provoke violent reactions or emotion should be avoided.

“Parties and candidates are to avoid training or enlisting the services of individuals or groups, e.g., masquerades, for the purpose of adopting physical force or coercion in a manner likely to arouse apprehension during campaigns,” the REC said.

He therefore warned politicians against the use of armed private security organisations during campaigns or election processions.

He also enjoined political parties and their candidates to comply with these provisions as contravening them will attract sanctions.

He said that any political party, aspirant or candidate who contravened Section 92 of the Act would be fined N1 million or 12 months imprisonment.

He however said a political party that contravened the provision of Section 92 would be fined N2 million and N1 million for any subsequent offence.

He said further that any candidate or aspirant who equipped any person or group to display physical force commit an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N500,000 or three years imprisonment.

He urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to monitor the campaign process as well as ensure efficient and effective deployment of personnel for peaceful electioneering.
