Ben Bruce Laments About The Rejection Of His Bill For Electric Cars In Nigeria by AutoJoshNG: 12:15pm On May 10, 2019

Recently, the Nigerian Senate rejected the Electric Car Bill proposed by Senator Ben-Murray Bruce.

The bill with the objective of phasing out the use of petroleum/diesel vehicles by 2035 and have them replaced by electric cars.

The bill was first read on April 10th. However, it was never approved for a second reading because the Senate considered it irrelevant.

According to Senator Ben-Murray, the introduction of electric cars in the country will help Nigeria actualize a clean energy policy, encourage the use of modern technology, de-emphasize on oil consumption, and also reduce air pollution.

Earlier today, Senator Ben Bruce took to Twitter to lament the rejection of the bill in a tweet he captioned:

“This is the reality in the world today. Electric cars are outselling regular cars. Yet, Nigeria refuses to plan for this inevitability on the pretext that we are an oil-producing nation. Norway is an oil producing country. But she is also a sensible nation”.

Twitter senator and twitter lamentations grin

Over the years, I have come to realise that the root of the problem with this country can be found in many of our homes. There is a high likelihood that the problems faced by a typical Nigerian family is bigger than what an entire country outside Nigeria has to face in years...and the reason is just...Selfishness (lack of consideration for other people)... This is probably why we are where we are today.

The tweeting senator, being an online advocate of Common sense should know better that of all bills, his electric "billshit" should come last cos until we get some things right, this bill will do little or nothing to help solve our problems. Only God knows what he has to gain from it for him to be crying like a child whose candy-bar has been snatched...

I can say it with all I have got that this cross-breed does not mean well for this country like he does for his business.

As if that is the major problems common masses are going through.

May be he's lamentations is based on how to refund pre payment cash from the companies that could have been the major contractors had it been the bill was passed..

What do I know self..

Electric cars would reduce demand for fossil fuels like petrol and diesel thereby driving the price down. If the dependency on fossil fuels drop, the price will drop too.

It will also increase the need for more electricity and will force the government to either step up PHCN services or allow private firms come into the power industry.
If private firms take over the power sector, the competition will lead to improved power supply & reduced electricity tariffs (just like how MTN & Glo knocked out the likes of Nitel, Econet etc).

Improved electricity supply leads to business boom as we all know that SMEs have always cited inadequate electricity supply as a major problem hindering growth since it takes a huge chunk of their capital.

Higher output by SMEs leads to an overall boost for the economy as SMEs account for about 48% of Nigeria's GDP.
It also leads to the creation of more jobs, better income distribution, reduced air pollution, etc. I could go on & on...

It is a win-win for everybody involved.

What the hell are you on about?
The world is moving away from fossil fuels but you zombies think we should move towards it.
Must you zombies blindly support anything that you are asked to support without critically looking at it?

The last time I check, Nigeria is running a free system and everyone is free to buy what they want. If I buy an electric car today, is it the government's business? On the other hand, there are many issues plaguing Nigeria and Ben Bruce thinks bill for electric cars trump them all? The man is really very far from the realities in Nigeria nay, his constituency.

To those who are saying we are not matured for it, I tell you that we are. How do nations develop? You make laws to give your people a direction. Nigeria has no policy directon and that’s the big problem.

Though the man is thinking ahead but this is just not necessary in a country like Nigeria now. Bringing electric cars to a country without electricity makes no sense.

Provide 24/7 electricity in Nigeria and we will be glad to use electric cars. Just imagine how cars would be stopping on the road just same way phone battery dies anyhow. One cannot even charge phone battery full if you don't have a generator.

actually this is problem with nigeria

we always fail to plan for the future and inevitable. it's always about what do we get now.

older generations failed to plan for the current technology that is currently dominating world economy cos they felt they had oil.

they failed to build new roads cos they felt our population is small then we dont need many roads same goes for power.

as much as i hate hearing this hypocritical bruce talk, he is right on this. im sure if we dont plan about the future in terms of electic vehicles.

younger generations will curse us like we are cursing the older generation.

EV is the future, we have to embrace it now so we can make giant stride when it becomes totally mainstream.

we need serious foresight
