Electric cars would reduce demand for fossil fuels like petrol and diesel thereby driving the price down. If the dependency on fossil fuels drops, the price will drop too.

It will also increase the need for more electricity and will force the government to either step up PHCN services or allow private firms come into the power industry.
If private firms take over the power sector, the competition will lead to improved power supply & reduced electricity tariffs (just like how MTN & Glo knocked out the likes of Nitel, Econet etc).

Improved electricity supply leads to business boom as we all know that SMEs have always cited inadequate electricity supply as a major problem hindering growth since it takes a huge chunk of their capital.

Higher output by SMEs leads to an overall boost to the economy as SMEs account for about 48% of Nigeria's GDP.
It also leads to the creation of more jobs, better income distribution, reduce air pollution, etc. I could go on & on...

It is a win-win for everybody involved.

What the hell are you on about?
The world is moving away from fossil fuels but you zombies think we should move towards it.
Must you zombies blindly support anything that you are asked to support without critically looking at it?

Oil is getting out of market, whether they like it or not.... America hardly forget things.. the day a saudi king said america cannot do without oil, that they (saudi) can live without oil money, they never knew america never slept over that foolish statement... they started working on how to utilize other energy sources, while saudis were busy buying latest cars, phones, air conditioners and marrying multiple wives etc... thinking it will continue that way

Ben Bruce is a fu..cking dunce!

Electric cars is the least of our problems now, we have more pressing matters in the sector which is crucial for electric cars to function well!

Mounting and decades long problems in the power sector NEEDS to be fixed first!

PHCN no longer exists, and the government cannot be held responsible for the electricity situation. The power industry has been privatized, from the generation company, to the distribution company, all are private entities. The only thing the government can do is regulate.

The Electric Car Bill was Senator Bruce best contribution during his time in the Senate. If Nigeria starts early, even if it's baby steps, we'd go somewhere. Germany, France and other countries are already in the transition process. We don't have to wait until the world is a Million miles ahead. We'll it's Nigeria, if e no go benefit them, e no concern th em.

A day would come, when we'd look back and remember this bill.

Don't be surprised when one African country use this as expo and start their own. I'm talking about countries like South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia.

Recently, the Nigerian Senate rejected the Electric Car Bill proposed by Senator Ben-Murray Bruce.

The bill with the objective of phasing out the use of petroleum/diesel vehicles by 2035 and have them replaced by electric cars.

The bill was first read on April 10th. However, it was never approved for a second reading because the Senate considered it irrelevant.

According to Senator Ben-Murray, the introduction of electric cars in the country will help Nigeria actualize a clean energy policy, encourage the use of modern technology, de-emphasize on oil consumption, and also reduce air pollution.

Earlier today, Senator Ben Bruce took to Twitter to lament the rejection of the bill in a tweet he captioned:

“This is the reality in the world today. Electric cars are outselling regular cars. Yet, Nigeria refuses to plan for this inevitability on the pretext that we are an oil-producing nation. Norway is an oil producing country. But she is also a sensible nation”.

I support the views of Senator Ben Murray Bruce on the need to introduce greener energy use in Nigeria.

We can not afford to do otherwise.

The developed nations of the world is fast showing lesser interest in our crude oil.

I also think Nigeria should explore SOLAR ENERGY.

We have a lot of sun burning away in Nigeria.

mumu. He doesn't think about the economic implication of his bill. He's only after name, as the person who sponsors such bill.

For your information, Norway, Canada Saudi Arabia and recently USA r not part of Paris Climate deal for the single reason they are producing oil, partaking in such deal, will be detrimental to their economies. So this fool wants Nigeria, who has only oil as it main source of revenue to pass electric car bill

Twitter senator and twitter lamentations grin

Over the years, I have come to realise that the root of the problem with this country can be found in many of our homes. There is a high likelihood that the problems faced by a typical Nigerian family is bigger than what an entire country outside Nigeria has to face in years...and the reason is just...Selfishness (lack of consideration for other people)... This is probably why we are where we are today.

The tweeting senator, being an online advocate of Common sense should know better that of all bills, his electric "billshit" should come last cos until we get some things right, this bill will do little or nothing to help solve our problems. Only God knows what he has to gain from it for him to be crying like a child whose candy-bar has been snatched...

I can say it with all I have got that this cross-breed does not mean well for this country like he does for his business.
While I explain your reply to a primary 3 kid as a Senator who is planing to roof a house when he has not bought a land for laying foundation.

Ben Bruce is right, and Nigeria has no control over this. Most countries will stop production of cars running on petrol in 10-15 years. We will be helpless at that time. We also stand to gain a lot as fuel importation will reduce and less subsidies, currently in trillions per year.
I see us in confusion and panic mode at that time, unless we prepare

You talk as if you can see the future. But things don't usually pan out the way we say. Let's talk about electric cars when we first have a nationwide supply of renewable energy. Cos even if u import tons of electric cars, u still have to charge them, with what? Electricity that isn't stable and occasionally unavailable for days or u go on gen to charge ur car which is pointless cos you'll still depend on fuels. Bruce is right in his idea but its too early for Nigeria. I love your predictions tho, i pray to God it goes as u say it will go.

Reading the comments here, I can clearly see Nigeria's problem. Many citizens are not ready to develop. Do you think it is impossible for Nigeria to adopt electric cars by 2035? If not for corruption, we can raise the needed power capacity in not more than 3 years (Egypt did it in just over 2). See Nigerians defending their mediocre leaders. These are reasons why we as a people need to come together and do away with people who have kept us this way. That we are a mono economy dependent on oil, whose fault? Isn't Nigeria blessed with every resource known to man?

I still wonder why people are batching this man, what is wrong in passing a bill that will affect us in 15 years to come . He never mentioned now , it’s a project for the future . Only want to encourage the government for proper planning and making alternative for the future to come .

You guys should read the article . It’s a bill for 2035 . 15years is a long time for any sensible government to plan .

We are here today cos our government has failed to plan . Don’t let us support them we can do better than this .
