Why would you wait till your certificate entered your hand before asking this question?

It's the mistake many Nigerian graduates make. If you don't know what your life will be or look like before you write your final exams, then you are not serious.

Good one bro.
To be honest with you, you stand a better chance anytime anyday with your result.
Power engineering is fast selling so channel all your energy toward that field. You don't need masters degree for now, all you need is short courses. Goto Siemens and learn rotatery
machines I.e Gas turbine. Cryogels and anything thermodynamics related.
Goto NAPTIN office and ask them about federal government scholarship to study in NAPTIN.
If you're in Lagos, goto Egbin and learn how things work..
Power generation is mechanical while transmission and distribution is for electrical engineers to handle.
You can also go into alternative power sources like solar and wind which I believe you did in your 400 level.

Since you read Mechanical Engineering, I’ll advice you set up a Mechanic shop. Get your tools box and work don start be that. More ‘Grease’ to your elbow.

With the theory and all mathematical jargons learnt in thermo , machine design, manufacturing and so on.I laugh in Greek.
Write GRE and TOEFL..Search for foreign scholarship. God might pick your call. Note if you have these exams you can inbox me for good schools with reasonable funding for students.

All the best.

That was then, this days the banking industry is a big life saver after the education sector. They especially consider the engineering g guys because they feel they will be good with calculations, plus they will be easy to train.
I know at least four of my colleagues whom we studied geology together, who are in the banking sector.
In fact the manager of my university branch of one of the new generation banks when I was in school was the best graduating student in that same Geology department in his own time. Like somebody said, they no they tell person now o. As I like oil company or university reach, nobody teach me when time reach before I swerve.
At some point in life, the only thing that come to mind is survival.
Hmmm...now I grab...
We need to survive na...I don't think banking industry is lucrative like engineering is....but man have to survive

Programming skills like?

greenskittles:

Option 1:
Study for the GRE and TOEFL
Ace the exams, and start applying to American schools. A killer statement of purpose and top scores will get you a scholarship and you're out of here, sset yourself up from there. If you need more advice on this check out the nairaland USA students thread.

Option 2:
Find a well,or at least decently paying job in Nigeria, learn some programming skills for extra income and figure out how to incorporate both your engineering and programming skills together. Learning to code in this era opens 10x more opportunities for you.

Option 3:
Find a contract job in a university, either as a graduate assistant or lab technician. Either:

-Build on this for a career in academia
-Use the free time this job affords you to study for the FE Mechanical Exam (international engineering licensing exam) and pass, then use an agent to find a job abroad.

I'm in the same shoes as you, though I graduated with a first class, in Civil Engineering, and I'm simultaneously pursuing all options I listed above until one "opens up". All the best.

Which one is data engineer? What do they do?
lordally:

Ok you have done a good job by making a second class upper... Glasses up for you well by the way it's just a good step in the right direction and I will say you have done your part now welcome to the real world as it stands now the only way or rather the surest way of making it in Nigeria legally and quickly is through information technology which is called IT ..... Have you ever noticed each time there is a job opening either in the Nigerian civil service or any other government parastatal there is always multitude of crowds and a stampede and some people even lose their lifes? It's because these are jobs that requires non-technical skills that's why lots of people push towards it!!!

But have you ever seen a case where there is a job opening where PROGRAMMERS, UI/UX DESIGNERS , APP DEVELOPER , IOS DEVELOPER , DATA SCIENTIST , DATA ENGINEERS are needed and there are crowds or stampede? NEVER!!! because people who possess the skills are scarce therefore leading to the higher pay!!!

BRO I WOULD ADVICE YOU LOOK AT WHERE YOUR INTEREST LIES AND CHOOSE A COURSE IN ICT THAT INTEGRATES WITH THAT INTERES!!!

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER THAT IS JOBLESS I REPEAT I HAVE NEVER EVER SEEN ACCEPT SAY THE PERSON NO KNOW IN WORK!!! I JUST FINISHED MY NYSC LAST YEAR OCTOBER ....AND I'M CURRENTLY WARMING UP TO GO FOR A SOFTWARE ENGINEERING TRAINING AT STUTERN...... IN VIEW TO BE A FULL STACK SOFTWARE DEVELOPER/ENGINEER .... AND BABA ONCE IM DONE WORK GO DEY FIND ME!!! IM 100% SURE!!!! ONE OF MY COURSE MATE JUST HAD HIS INTERVIEW AND MEDICALS WITH UNITY BANK HE WENT THIS FAR BECAUSE HIS AN APP DEVELOPER!!

BRO IN SUMMARY HERE IS MY ADVICE .... IF YOU ARE IN LAGOS I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO TRY AND REGISTER FOR THE STUTERN GRADUATE ACCELERATOR PROGRAM ....those guys are super good in training and are less expensive!!!! And the training is for 4 months after that baba I swear!!! The highest you would stay at home without a job is one month!!!

That's my little cent bro!!!

it is just like you having two shoes..you would definitely like one than the other..
Both really are lucrative and easy...
But if I were the one, I will choose photography simply because it is easy to combine it with another work that deals with internet.. also as a photographer, you really have a lot of work to do.

Photography is more than renting a shop and snapping pics pre pre.. u would need to be vast in use of photoshop and other photo-editing apps.. cos all these are what would make you stand out among ur competitors..
.

.

Do you know another advantage of choosing photography? It is because you can start with lesser amount compared to catering, all u need is a small place, furnish it and watch customers flow..

.

Catering on the other hand is a very lucrative yet delicate job.. u need to know people here, and also you need to be very persuasive and very good before a stranger can consider giving you a job oo.. u also need a big capital for catering..
And catering takes time before it pays off..( atleast some months)..
Note that , any mistake in catering job can cost you big time

All in all, It depends on your passion..

While you apply for multinational company jobs which usually recruit graduate trainees every year; shell, ExxonMobil, Schlumberger, Saipem, Mantrac, Oil Test, Nestlé, NBC via one engineering agency like that, I think AETI, Guinness Diageo, etc, go to Google now and Google free masters degree in Finland, Norway, Sweden....It's free and will give you a good exposure.

South Korea is also running a free all expense sponsored scholarships for foreign graduates and it's an awesome opportunity that you will forever grateful to ever participate if you are finally selected.

I have not come here to joke, please go for nysc first there save money now that the government is paying well. Use the money saved to enroll for professional training, like the one run by outomedic. Go to their website and find out. Specialise in any of brands Toyota I recommend because it is common in Nigeria. Put your heart and be humble to undergo the training. I tell you don't thank me, but give praise to God because your life will
never remained the same. God bless you.

I don't know about that. There are threads on Norway, you may want to start there.

Start the process first. Check other countries I mentioned.

What about South Korea, are you interested in an opportunity there

Meanwhile you can learn programming on the side while job hunting it will save you soon.

Learn Python mostly.

Don't waste time learning how to operate lathe machine, spend the time learning programming. You can learn on YouTube or try programming for newbies
I don't mind South Korea. Oh, I'm a graduate. For programming, I put that on hold as I'm currently learning data analysis through Microsoft on edX.

FrLukas:

First, the craft I am talking about doesn't need to be related with what you are studying in school.

Second, maybe you should have considered a non-paying internship. They probably rejected you cos of the monthly allowance or stipend they'd have to give you. If you had told them you'll work for free, maybe you'd have been able to secure a place.

Third, I am sure that's not the only auto industry around. Is it? Did you try others, even in Ibadan?
Well, I did tell them I don't mind working for free. Then again, na Lagos I dey stay, not Ibadan.
