A sheep has been bought for £367,500 (₦188,584,142.44) at an auction, the price makes it the most expensive sheep to have ever been sold.

Pedigree Texel ram lamb Double Diamond was sold to three farmers at the Scottish National Texel Sale in Lanark on Thursday.

The opening bid was £10,000, with Charlie Boden and his family from their Sportsman’s flock in Stockport, Greater Manchester, pocketing the final bid.

According to Sky News, one of the buyers, Jeff Aiken, flock manager at Procters Farm said that a lot of breeders had their eye on Double Diamond as he was a “special animal”. He said:

I knew he was going to be a lot of money but I wasn’t expecting him to make that much. He’s just an outstanding animal. He’s a massive lamb with great confirmation and character, some of which is what breeding is all about. But with the pedigree you start looking at the smaller details of the lamb, you look at his head, the hair colour, the colour around his eyes, legs, he was just perfect in every way.

Aiken accepted £367,500 was ‘an obscene amount of money to pay for a sheep’ and ‘should not be a reflection on the farming community’.

These are breeders, many think it'd a waste of money, but the farmer that bought that sheep is definitely not stvpid. Breeding is a lot of money. Now imagine the pedigree if he's the only farmer with this stock and the quality of wool it produces and other farmers need to pay him for this sheep to breed with theirs.

This is really big business o, especially in the UK. If you think this expensive, check the price tag of horses, especially a stallion with pedigree and reputable ancestry.

Something that will end up in my mother's pot of soup undecided, you are not serious

The point is a breeder will use this sheep to make other sheep. Good breeds have various qualities that make them valuable: their wool, their resistance to disease, the quality of the meat, etc. This is a male and he will be used to create many man lambs with his traits, sometimes up to a thousand, depending on how prolific he is. Exclusive coats, rugs, and many other things made from wool will result from this sheep and its progeny.

And many other farmers/breeders would pay to have their sheep mate with this one for the above qualities.
