Well, going by his anteceDEnts, I learnt he's very thorough and strict, but with a poor human rights record.

I still dont know who I'll vote as the president. However, what I do know is I WILL NOT vote for GEJ. I am simply not ready for another 4 years of inactivity. There seems to be too many people who have vested interest in him becoming president that he cannot but do their bidding.
It is also an insult on the educated Nigerians like me for someone to advise me to vote for GEJ because "he is divinely ordained to be the president". WHY? Because of the Deputy Gov - Acting Gov - Governor -Vice President - Acting President - President gimmick. What Cheap!

As for the PDP, I find it grossly annoying that a party that has ruled me for 12years without solving our most basic economic problem, Power supply, is now asking for another 4 years to solve it. Are we really naive in this part of the world Havent we given this party enough chance to right the wrong, only to be repeatedly failed. Will magic will happen in 4 years that could not happened in 12 years. Let us at least give another party a chance. Especially if another person seems to have a clearer idea on how to solve our mire of problems.

Last week I made a decision to vote another candidate (apart from PDP) for the presidency and PDP for the governorship in Lagos if their candidate can convince me. Well, yesterday I had the chance to hear him (Dosumu) speak. But i was greatly disappointed. He simply doesnt have it. which, sadly, is a reflection of the PDP accross most of the states: shocking lack of know-how! So i'm going for BRF once again. As for the presidency, I await the presidential campaign, minus GEJ.

Nigerian peoples revolution has began. This are not rented crowd but citizens who yearning for change in the way their affairs is been run. It is time to rescue Nigeria from the PDP cabal. Buhari Bakare all through.

After reading this morning about Bankole boasting about the change to the electoral act that will make it impossible for the courts to throw out governors who had rigged elections and saying that the worst case they will only order a re-run of which the PDP will win again and again,I expect that every right thinking Nigeria will know beyond any shadow of doubt that voting for PDP is like a death wish.

This Party simple stands for every malaise that has afflicted Nigeria these past 12 years.This is a party without any shame.
They have failed to meet the most basic needs of Nigerian.

THE Difference is very clear.
Ghadaffi amass a lot of wealth home and abroad, he is still a millitary man and you remember that recently, UK just blocked his attempt to transfer about £900million personnal cash.
 Now this is Buhari who was a former head of state, former head of PTF where he was controlling hundreds of billion of dollars. Will you believe if i tell you that this man does not have a single building in Abuja. Is that not rare?  No foreign Account or multiple and questionable local accounts unlike these days politicians. buhari is now a civillian man, he will need the authorization of NASS for many things he will do. So i have no fear about him. It's the rare qualities in him that i'm voting for. Nigeria needs such a man at this rotten state.

Fashola got to Lagos and demolished many structures that even some millitary men dare not attempt, it was painful at first but now are they not enjoying it? Lagos is now very neat and with high level of orderliness.

The point is if with the knowledge in present day 2011 (AD) Africans especially Nigerians can't rise up to the occasion then I wonder how on earth the current generation will see a change in their life. The Petroleum Trust Fund, headed by former President, Gen. Buhari, has confounded all its critics. As a development agency, it has succeeded spectacularly where all others failed. Pini Jason has the details.

The one silver lining to emerge from the current heavy economic cloud must be the performance of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF). In October 1994, General Sani Abacha hiked the pump price of petrol from N3.25 to N11 per litre, promising, with Decree 25, to set up a Petroleum Trust Fund to distribute the gains from the increase on social and infrasturctural projects. The board of the fund, headed by former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, was eventually inaugurated on March 21, 1995.

The Fund began with an initial capital of about N60bn in 1996. Its all encompassing mandate includes the rehabilitation of roads and waterways, educational and health institutions, providing textbooks and stationary, procuring essential drugs and vaccines, providing water supply systems, reviving crumbling agricultural sectors, connecting outlying areas to the national electricity grid, extending railways and telecommunications and ensuring consistent food supply.

The huge budget and all-embracing mandate earned PTF some criticisms. Some dubbed it "the alternative government," accusing it of duplicating the responsibilities of other existing government agencies. There was for instance an initial conflict about who should be tarring which road, between PTF and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

Yet, for once, other Nigerians began to hope that here was an agency that took its work seriously. The question was: could it carry out its entire mandate, or even a part of it? Everyone waited to see what would happen.

Initially PTF awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 12,000km of federal highways (including drainages) nationwide, and between 25-100km of urban road in major cities such as Gusau, Benin, Funtua, Zaria, Enugu, Kaduna, Aba, Lagos, Lokoja, and Port Harcourt. A N27.3bn contract was awarded for road rehabilitation in the first quarter of 1996. The sum of N1.328bn was awarded to 53 pharmaceutical companies for the supply of drugs, while the importation of vaccines cost N229.9m. As at December 31, 1997, funds available to PTF stood at N115.1bn.

One thing even the most uncharitable critic of PTF will admit is that it has evolved a new way of doing things. This is true to its mission statement which is 'to establish and operate an open, modest and efficient organisation for the purpose of achieving the honest and timely execution of carefully designed socio-economic projects.'

Right from its inception, the Head of State directed the fund to operate a lean bureaucracy. It depends therefore largely on consultants supervised by Afri-Projects Consortium, the management consultant to PTF. This policy has created jobs and boosted the confidence of Nigerian professionals such as architects, engineers and quantity surveyors.

In many other ways, PTF has thrown a lifeline to dying sectors of the economy. Most of Nigeria's pharmaceutical companies were failing, and the foreign multinationals were divesting. But through its drugs procurement programme, PTF has turned the balance sheet of most of them into profit. Equipment and car leasing companies are also benefitting from the multiplier effects of PTF operations.

Banks and insurance companies have also benefited. Nigeria has a history of contractors collecting mobilisation (advance) fees and not carrying out the contract. But not with PTF. Every advance payment up to N10m must be guaranteed by a PTF-approved bank, while other advance payments are covered by performance bonds issued by similarly approved insurance companies. This method, apart from increasing solvency through cash deposits, has created business for banks and insurance companies.

One of the insurance companies that has benefited from PTF as a provider of performance bonds is The United Nigeria Insurance Company (UNIC), a composite insurance company which provides both life and non-life insurance. The total assets of UNIC stood at N979m while it grossed premium income of N916m and settled claims of N263m in 1996. With a staff of 552 spread all over its nationwide branch network, UNIC is today one of the leading insurance company in Nigeria.

Another company that has done good business with PTF is IPWA plc, formerly International Paints (West Africa) Ltd. IPWA is today one of the biggest and most diversified paint manufacturers in Nigeria. The company product range spans automotive paints, building paints, industrial coatings and marine coatings. Others are packaging coatings, protective coatings and wood finishes.

Most PTF contractors, specialist advisers and consultants lease and use computers, fax machines, printers and photocopiers. This has provided a new market for computer companies like Leading Edge Ltd., headed by Mr Tony Edoro, the managing director. Leading Edge is foremost in cloning computers with parts from diverse companies such as US Micro-Generation, IBM Direct, Merisel and Gateway. According to Mr Edoro, a widely experienced computer systems engineer, the advent of PTF has been good for Leading Edge. The company's turnover has grown from N50m in 1995 to well over N100m in 1997.

Apart from energising several sectors of the economy, PTF is also setting the pace in another direction. In the words of Mr Salihijo Ahmad, of Afri-Projects Consortium, the twin objectives of PTF are to "rehabilitate infrastructures and reorientate the people." This the fund does through its insistence on transparency even though some critics still accuse it of lopsidedness in project execution and selection of consultants and contractors.

In a country dogged by lack of transparency, PTF is the first, and perhaps the only public institution in Nigeria to publish its annual accounts. Last year, when he presented the annual report and accounts of 1996, Gen. Buhari promised to present the 1997 accounts before the end of the first quarter of 1998. He fulfilled that promise.

The 1997 account of PTF shows that it disbursed N24.3bn on roads, N21.2bn on security, N7.8bn on health, and N3bn on other projects. Other disbursements include N2.2bn on water supply, N936m on food supply and N476m on education. It realised a total of N1.049bn from various investment activities.

Reviewing the success story of PTF, Gen. Buhari said: "We have consolidated our execution of the take-off projects for the previous year and increased our intervention within the sectors. There is no doubt that the years ahead will witness even more intervention, as reports of some of the studies commissioned are received and project execution commenced."

The fund has embarked on community education to sensitise and enlighten communities of its activities. The idea is to bring recipients closer to the objectives of the fund, so that they can participate in project identification and selection as well as eventual PTF projects in their areas.

One aspect of the overall project that the public has raised an eyebrow over is the Armed Forces PTF. According to Gen. Buhari, PTF is under instruction to allocate 20% of its funds to the armed forces, and another 1% to the Federal Capital Territory. The allocation to the Armed Forces is probably a continuation of a practice that started during Gen. Babangida's time when he used to allocate excess revenue from the projected price of crude directly to the commanding officers. But what worries critics of PTF is that the military is not accountable to anyone regarding its utilisation of funds. Moreover, critics question the wisdom of allocating such a huge chunk to the military (who also usually takes the lion's share of the budget) over and above food supply, education and health. Apart from roads, the allocation to all other sectors does not add up to the Armed Forces PTF allocation.

Nobody knows how long PTF, a purely intensive intervention agency, will last or whether there will be a place for such an agency under a democratic set up. That decision, Gen. Buhari said, will be up to Nigerians. For now his preoccupation is to rehabilitate infrastructure and reorientate the people towards a new, effective and efficient way of executing uninflated contracts without kickbacks and without consuming mobilisation fees. Said Gen. Buhari to PTF contractors: "If you perform well, you get a hand shake. If you perform badly, you get a handcuff."

I'll say we all should try to vote PDP out first of all, it's obvious they have nothing to offer as we have seen in the last 12 years but we should explore more options.

My friends, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Muhammadu Buhari, the
former military Head of State. And I thank the Almighty God who gave
me the unique opportunity to serve this nation from the humble rank of
Platoon Commander to Commander-in-Chief, at the revered rank of a
general in the Nigerian army. I acknowledge the hand of God on me, when
I found myself serving as the Country’s Head of State in the aftermath of a
military coup.

I submit that, in the affairs of man, it is only God that can determine history
and ordain destiny. In my own case, it is destiny that threw me up to serve
as the Head of State of this great country at that particular moment of our
national history.

I would say, with all humility that, I dutifully accepted all the challenges
and responsibilities of head of state and government. Whatever role I
played, whether as leader or member of government, all my decisions
and actions were always guided by a clear conscience; I was also guided
by and agreement with my colleagues and members of my Executive
council – which always enabled me to try to avoid impropriety, dishonesty,
corruption and other forms of abuse of office and power. My conscience
constantly guided me to treat everyone and every group in the country with
fairness and equity. That is why I can stand before Nigerians here today,
and hold my head high – knowing that I am ever ready to face any scrutiny
or answer any question regarding my past performance as a public figure. I
am always ready to give account of my past records to the Nigerian people.
However, it is my firm belief that our occasion today is not about the past –
rather it is an engagement that reflects on the future of our Country. We are
today facing an uncertain future in an uncertain world. It is vital Nigerians
make the right choice about who would look after them in the next four
years.
I am standing here today as the Presidential candidate of Congress for
Progressive Change (CPC). I consider myself to be on a rescue mission.
Never before have we seen such bad leadership in our national life.
The country’s life is literally falling apart on all fronts on security, in
education, on the economy, in healthcare system, and youth employment.
Many critical observers have begun to list Nigeria among the failed states of
the 21st century.
We are internationally recognized for corruption, inefficiency, business
uncertainty and infrastructural decay. For 12 years the PDP government
has failed to tackle all these problems in spite of the resources at their
disposal. We can and we must reverse these trends. The first step is for
Nigerians to vote PDP out. They are finished! They have passed their “sell –
by date”
Given the current state of affairs in the country, Nigerians have the
legitimate right to ask the following questions: Where was the government
when this great country of ours took a nose-dive on many critical sectors?
Why does this government run from pillar to post, looking helpless, as it
beats about the bush on the fundamental issue of resolving electric power
supply challenge of the country?
Why should our economy be left to operate on individual power Generating
sets? Furthermore, if their aspiration to govern Nigeria for the next 60-
years or 200 years is pure, why are they unable to guarantee something as
fundamental and basic as security of life and property?
Where was the PDP-led government when what started as occasional
incidents of kidnapping degenerated to the embarrassing dimension of an
incorporated evil business?
Does it matter to this administration that insecurity has compelled many
potential foreign investors to drop Nigeria from their list?
Should we continue to vote the same people who have presided over the
decline in quality of life in Nigeria for the last twelve years?
Shamefully, these people are openly canvassing a desire to rule Nigeria for
sixty or 200 years! Nigerians must reject these ‘political zoo keepers’ and
stop them in their tracks. And stop them now. During the last twelve years,
they have almost transformed Nigeria into the proverbial animal farm
where sycophants dominate both the airwaves and print media.
Enough of PDP! Enough of them! The CPC movement is poised to restore
confidence in our people. We are providing the platform that would enable
the country break out of the present stranglehold. We in the CPC see and
share the plight of the suffering citizens. We in the CPC here today offer a
political platform whose imperative is to rescue Nigeria and reposition it
for greater economic development and social well being. As such the first
order of business for the CPC-led government would be to secure
Nigeria better and to manage it better. The priority will be to end
the feeling of insecurity in the country.
NATIONAL SECURITY
Security of life and property is the number one duty of any government.
No responsible government would allow religious killings, ritual killings,
bombing, armed robbery, kidnapping, to continue unchallenged within its
jurisdiction.
The immediate task at hand must be to secure Nigeria better and manage
it better. I therefore pledge to you that if I am elected to be your president
in the upcoming 2011 election, I would secure Nigeria better and
manage it better. Our administration will pursue an exemplary shift that
will introduce far reaching and consultative reforms of Nigerian security
agencies in line with the best modern practices. We shall replace the on-
going cosmetic police reforms with a consultative reform of the police force
and other security agencies.
Unfortunately, Police Reforms in Nigeria have become the bywords for
bogus budgets and contracts which hardly have any impact the way police
officers do their jobs, neither has they ever trickled down to improve the
physical working environment at the police stations around the country.
If you vote for me, our administration will bring in smart and intelligent
policing that would have the fundamental human rights of citizens at heart.
We would build a robust intelligent infrastructure for the security agents in
the country. Our Nation’s Security must be predicated on the principle of
proactive intelligence designed to prevent crimes or security threats before
they take place. And quickly quell them when they occur. That is why we
must pay special attention to funding and improvement of our intelligence
infrastructures.
YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
About eighty-four million Nigerians are young people under the age of 18.
They represent sixty percent of the entire population. According to a recent
World Bank Report, about 50 million Nigerian youths are unemployed.
This figure represents a serious indictment of successive administrations
at all levels of governance. Not only have they never included Youth
employment in their list of priorities in the last twelve years, but the
issue of Youth employment has never been tackled with the seriousness it
deserves.
The young people of this country deserve much better deal than what they
have been getting. Unemployment, deprivation, poverty, hopelessness and
insecurity are part and parcel of our young men and women today.
It is my firm belief that politics and democracy must be willing to provide
answers to such fundamental societal issues as youth employment. I
implore the youth to vote en masse for CPC and we will look after you.
The possible CPC Government I may lead will pursue a policy that will
liberate the bottled-up energy in the private sector so as to enable them
deliver job creation opportunities in the country. We only need to consider
the number of employment positions created in Nigeria’s textile industry in
the past. The private sector must be empowered through improved power,
fuel, fair taxation regime and incentives to employ young people.
Our government shall establish a professionally managed Youth
Entrepreneurship and Employment Agency (YEEA) to enable enterprising
and innovative young Nigerian graduates to make their foray into the
business world. Much the same way their counterparts in the developed
nations are empowered. Then, and only then would our young people think
of baking the national cake rather than how to share it.
The unbridled depletion of the nation’s foreign reserve by 43-
percent within the last eighteen months - from $62.2billion to
$35.24 billion, is not only worrisome, but a confirmation of the
fact that Nigeria truly runs the most expensive, extravagant,
ineffective and unproductive government in the world! Yet the
young and old and everybody but PDP cronies are the worse for
EDUCATION SECTOR REFORMS
Our education system does not need any cosmetic reforms. 6-3-3-4 or 6-6-
4 sounds to me like the formation of a football team. It cannot be tinkered
with or amended any further along this path. The Nigerian Education
system needs a root – and branch reform. Education shall be a right to all
Nigerians but for a nation to develop it must get its education priorities
right. Nigeria cannot become the great nation of our dream without
the necessary brain power and human resources. We have no chance of
becoming great if we continue to maintain an education system whereby
only 20-percent of candidates pass SSCE/GCE examinations.
We are building more and more universities yet the present ones are
inadequately funded to undertake learning, teaching and research.
Mediocrity multiplied only produces mass mediocrity. Our aim, when in
government is to adequately fund the system to produce quality education
for development. Some Nigerians have wondered why we chose the pen as
part of CPC logo. Truth is, the pen symbolizes our commitment to quality
education and by extension knowledge, development and progress.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH
Our national economy which largely depends on crude oil exportation
to earn income can only be likened to flying on a single engine aircraft
with a single point of failure. The Nigeria oil money represents great
foreign exchange earning potential. However, countries like Indonesia,
Norway, and UAE that discovered oil have used their oil revenue to build a
diversified economy.
Agriculture used to represent 80-percent of the Nigerian economy until oil
was discovered in the country. Today, agriculture represents 45-percent
of our economy – even at that, the impact of agriculture is hardly felt in
the economy as commercial agriculture is almost non-existent, with no
agricultural firm quoted in the nation’s stock exchange.
We need to encourage commercial agriculture through a well-
orchestrated policy for food security and economic growth
beyond the current politics of fertilizer distribution! We shall
also help small farmers with petty holdings in the form of inputs
and access to small scale credit.
STRENGTHENING DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS AND
FIGHTING CORRUPTION
The biggest challenge to democracy in Nigeria today is represented by
the weakness of our collective democratic institutions compared to the

and uses them to advance its position to the detriment of others.

My friends, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Muhammadu Buhari, the

Platoon Commander to Commander-in-Chief, at the revered rank of a
general in the Nigerian army. I acknowledge the hand of God on me, when
I found myself serving as the Country’s Head of State in the aftermath of a
military coup.

I submit that, in the affairs of man, it is only God that can determine history
and ordain destiny. In my own case, it is destiny that threw me up to serve
as the Head of State of this great country at that particular moment of our
national history.

I would say, with all humility that, I dutifully accepted all the challenges
and responsibilities of head of state and government. Whatever role I
played, whether as leader or member of government, all my decisions
and actions were always guided by a clear conscience; I was also guided
by and agreement with my colleagues and members of my Executive
council – which always enabled me to try to avoid impropriety, dishonesty,
corruption and other forms of abuse of office and power. My conscience
constantly guided me to treat everyone and every group in the country with
fairness and equity. That is why I can stand before Nigerians here today,
and hold my head high – knowing that I am ever ready to face any scrutiny
or answer any question regarding my past performance as a public figure. I
am always ready to give account of my past records to the Nigerian people.
However, it is my firm belief that our occasion today is not about the past –
rather it is an engagement that reflects on the future of our Country. We are
today facing an uncertain future in an uncertain world. It is vital Nigerians
make the right choice about who would look after them in the next four
years.
I am standing here today as the Presidential candidate of Congress for
Progressive Change (CPC). I consider myself to be on a rescue mission.
Never before have we seen such bad leadership in our national life.
The country’s life is literally falling apart on all fronts on security, in
education, on the economy, in healthcare system, and youth employment.
Many critical observers have begun to list Nigeria among the failed states of
the 21st century.
We are internationally recognized for corruption, inefficiency, business
uncertainty and infrastructural decay. For 12 years the PDP government
has failed to tackle all these problems in spite of the resources at their
disposal. We can and we must reverse these trends. The first step is for
Nigerians to vote PDP out. They are finished! They have passed their “sell –
by date”
Given the current state of affairs in the country, Nigerians have the
legitimate right to ask the following questions: Where was the government
when this great country of ours took a nose-dive on many critical sectors?
Why does this government run from pillar to post, looking helpless, as it
beats about the bush on the fundamental issue of resolving electric power
supply challenge of the country?
Why should our economy be left to operate on individual power Generating
sets? Furthermore, if their aspiration to govern Nigeria for the next 60-
years or 200 years is pure, why are they unable to guarantee something as
fundamental and basic as security of life and property?
Where was the PDP-led government when what started as occasional
incidents of kidnapping degenerated to the embarrassing dimension of an
incorporated evil business?
Does it matter to this administration that insecurity has compelled many
potential foreign investors to drop Nigeria from their list?
Should we continue to vote the same people who have presided over the
decline in quality of life in Nigeria for the last twelve years?
Shamefully, these people are openly canvassing a desire to rule Nigeria for
sixty or 200 years! Nigerians must reject these ‘political zoo keepers’ and
stop them in their tracks. And stop them now. During the last twelve years,
they have almost transformed Nigeria into the proverbial animal farm
where sycophants dominate both the airwaves and print media.
Enough of PDP! Enough of them! The CPC movement is poised to restore
confidence in our people. We are providing the platform that would enable
the country break out of the present stranglehold. We in the CPC see and
share the plight of the suffering citizens. We in the CPC here today offer a
political platform whose imperative is to rescue Nigeria and reposition it
for greater economic development and social well being. As such the first
order of business for the CPC-led government would be to secure
Nigeria better and to manage it better. The priority will be to end
the feeling of insecurity in the country.
NATIONAL SECURITY
Security of life and property is the number one duty of any government.
No responsible government would allow religious killings, ritual killings,
bombing, armed robbery, kidnapping, to continue unchallenged within its
jurisdiction.
The immediate task at hand must be to secure Nigeria better and manage
it better. I therefore pledge to you that if I am elected to be your president
in the upcoming 2011 election, I would secure Nigeria better and
manage it better. Our administration will pursue an exemplary shift that
will introduce far reaching and consultative reforms of Nigerian security
agencies in line with the best modern practices. We shall replace the on-
going cosmetic police reforms with a consultative reform of the police force
and other security agencies.
Unfortunately, Police Reforms in Nigeria have become the bywords for
bogus budgets and contracts which hardly have any impact the way police
officers do their jobs, neither has they ever trickled down to improve the
physical working environment at the police stations around the country.
If you vote for me, our administration will bring in smart and intelligent
policing that would have the fundamental human rights of citizens at heart.
We would build a robust intelligent infrastructure for the security agents in
the country. Our Nation’s Security must be predicated on the principle of
proactive intelligence designed to prevent crimes or security threats before
they take place. And quickly quell them when they occur. That is why we
must pay special attention to funding and improvement of our intelligence
infrastructures.
YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
About eighty-four million Nigerians are young people under the age of 18.
They represent sixty percent of the entire population. According to a recent
World Bank Report, about 50 million Nigerian youths are unemployed.
This figure represents a serious indictment of successive administrations
at all levels of governance. Not only have they never included Youth
employment in their list of priorities in the last twelve years, but the
issue of Youth employment has never been tackled with the seriousness it
deserves.
The young people of this country deserve much better deal than what they
have been getting. Unemployment, deprivation, poverty, hopelessness and
insecurity are part and parcel of our young men and women today.
It is my firm belief that politics and democracy must be willing to provide
answers to such fundamental societal issues as youth employment. I
implore the youth to vote en masse for CPC and we will look after you.
The possible CPC Government I may lead will pursue a policy that will
liberate the bottled-up energy in the private sector so as to enable them
deliver job creation opportunities in the country. We only need to consider
the number of employment positions created in Nigeria’s textile industry in
the past. The private sector must be empowered through improved power,
fuel, fair taxation regime and incentives to employ young people.
Our government shall establish a professionally managed Youth
Entrepreneurship and Employment Agency (YEEA) to enable enterprising
and innovative young Nigerian graduates to make their foray into the
business world. Much the same way their counterparts in the developed
nations are empowered. Then, and only then would our young people think
of baking the national cake rather than how to share it.
The unbridled depletion of the nation’s foreign reserve by 43-
percent within the last eighteen months - from $62.2billion to
$35.24 billion, is not only worrisome, but a confirmation of the
fact that Nigeria truly runs the most expensive, extravagant,
ineffective and unproductive government in the world! Yet the
young and old and everybody but PDP cronies are the worse for
EDUCATION SECTOR REFORMS
Our education system does not need any cosmetic reforms. 6-3-3-4 or 6-6-
4 sounds to me like the formation of a football team. It cannot be tinkered
with or amended any further along this path. The Nigerian Education
system needs a root – and branch reform. Education shall be a right to all
Nigerians but for a nation to develop it must get its education priorities
right. Nigeria cannot become the great nation of our dream without
the necessary brain power and human resources. We have no chance of
becoming great if we continue to maintain an education system whereby
only 20-percent of candidates pass SSCE/GCE examinations.
We are building more and more universities yet the present ones are
inadequately funded to undertake learning, teaching and research.
Mediocrity multiplied only produces mass mediocrity. Our aim, when in
government is to adequately fund the system to produce quality education
for development. Some Nigerians have wondered why we chose the pen as
part of CPC logo. Truth is, the pen symbolizes our commitment to quality
education and by extension knowledge, development and progress.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH
Our national economy which largely depends on crude oil exportation
to earn income can only be likened to flying on a single engine aircraft
with a single point of failure. The Nigeria oil money represents great
foreign exchange earning potential. However, countries like Indonesia,
Norway, and UAE that discovered oil have used their oil revenue to build a
diversified economy.
Agriculture used to represent 80-percent of the Nigerian economy until oil
was discovered in the country. Today, agriculture represents 45-percent
of our economy – even at that, the impact of agriculture is hardly felt in
the economy as commercial agriculture is almost non-existent, with no
agricultural firm quoted in the nation’s stock exchange.
We need to encourage commercial agriculture through a well-
orchestrated policy for food security and economic growth
beyond the current politics of fertilizer distribution! We shall
also help small farmers with petty holdings in the form of inputs
and access to small scale credit.
