If church business is such very lucrative, then go and open one.
If your money is not part of the church contributions and the people giving the tithe, offering etc are not complaining, what is your stress?
I've not heard anyone claiming that he/she was forced to give money in the church.
@ poster, I see this as a distraction cos you've got no fact about it.
To get to your destination in life, you've got to be focused.

I have always maintained that churches in nigeria are fiiled because of the poverty of the people, the chaos of the society, the failure of the government etc.nigeria is one of the few countries in the world gaining an admission into a college of education requires prayer, fasting, vgils, visitation to mountaintops, sowing a good seed, and eventually giving a testimony after gaining the admission.nigerians have developed a cultlike following for their pastors in the hope of gaining their favours to the extent that the pastor "lays his hand" on them which they believe translates to everlasting blessings.christians believe they have to give to their pastors, churches in order ro be blessed.this in itself isnt a wrong notion but many pastors use certain verses of the bible to induce their congregation into sacrificing their belongings unto God.this sacrifices translate into beautiful buildings, exotic suits, flashy cars, and flying jet(s).any individual who thinks its good for his spiritual leader to spend a whooping sum on additional automobiles, jets, houses in wherever land etc, needs to have himself checked.some nigerian churches post more profit than the largest companies on the NSE so i suggest begins to tax them.afterall Jesus said "give unto ceasar that which is ceasar's"

T.B Joshua might be one of the richest pastors in Nigeria, but his giving to the needy sets him on a different pedestal to the other components of the

bunch. He's an exemplary pastor, if you ask in all ramifications. He's one of the FEW Men of God that makes me believe that you don't have to be able

to speak three European languages, have a half-baked Scottish Gaelic accent, own four Jets, or own Scores of expensive Educational institutions to

make the presence of God manifest in your Church. He might have his personal shortcomings, but the ones i know of are as negligible as possible to

the ones of his colleagues. The rest of them lot on the poster's list a'int gonna command two iotas of respect from me. However, it is always good to

know that the God I serve lives in my heart and not necessarily within the confines of a Church. cool
Re: Forbes: The Five Richest Pastors In Nigeria by klovesh: 6:51pm On Jun 09, 2011
Really, I don't understand why the issue of rich Pastors has become a big deal on NL.
My take on it is as follows:

1.  I think there should be more constructive things that being discussed on this forum. We have had too much of discussion on rich pastors. Haba! I don't know what anybody will benefit from a kind of thread like this.

2. The ways by which money can come to a pastor are many. Don't always think it is the tithe and offering that they spend. For some churches those money go into church administration and running (trust me, it gulps a lot of money) and other things and not to the head pastor himself.

For example, I attend a church where the pastor is not paid a dime out of the collections in the church (I can say that confidently). The money he has are from personal gifts to him by people he has affected positively. With this he has more than enough and even gives out a lot of it. Will u blame me if I spend N2m on myself and my family after giving another N2m out? I don't think that is a bad way to live

These people that give gifts are not forced or cajoled on any way. It all depends on how much you value the person's influence in your life.
How much can you use to buy a good marriage, good health, sound spirit and mind etc. Some pastors have been used by God to bring this to a lot of people. They have mentored a lot of successful people too. So, if these people decide to give material things as a form of appreciation, I don't think anything is wrong with that. I will gladly give material to appreciate a person that has had a good influence on my life. No cajoling is needed

3. That a pastor is rich does not mean he/she doesn't give to the poor. If I remember well, the Bible does not encourage us to broadcast our noble deeds on the rooftops. It may be possible for a pastor to pay some couple of people's school fees without it making the headlines, but when he buys something, then the noise starts.

4. Many of these pastore have gone through a lot in the past. It They have sown. Many of you people talking can never give what some of them gave. Please, it will be unjust for you to just think they just sprang up a church and started making money like that. Don't just make assumptions.

4. You guys keep talking about some members of the congregation being poor. Note this: A pastor of a mostly poor congregation will be poor, and that of a mostly rich one will be rich. That is pure logic. And what do u expect the pastor to do to the poor people? To start dashing money out to them? I won't do that if I were the pastor. I will teach them what they can do about it, not give them money.

5. It is not everybody that will be a Mother Theresa. U guys saying all these too are not, and I don't think I want to either. So please separate a life devoted to extreme philantrophy from what we are saying here

Finally, for those that are Christians on this kind of thread, I will advise us to be careful in making comments. Some of these comments will upset the balance of fledgling Christians. I am referring to Christians in the thread here.

U don't want to be the person that will cause a new convert to dump his/her faith. I don't think any matured christian will criticise a man of God, ESPECIALLY WHEN U HAVE LIMITED INFORMATION. Leave God to judge both you and them

Wish everyone the best in life

Re: Forbes: The Five Richest Pastors In Nigeria by dasa: 7:24pm On Jun 09, 2011
Initially these pastors started out with a sincere heart. But when the tithe, offerings and gifts started flowing, they soon lost their way.

In church its all about prosperity. they are just motivational speakers with knowledge of the Bible.

These riches should be redirected to massive charity works, do you know how many free schools and hospitals Oyedepo can build? But being a BusinessMan his schools have to make profit and not just sustain themselves. They are reserved for the elite and not for the benefit of those who cant afford it.

God will judge.

I couldn't have say it better, I'm a Xtian and I believe we should sow into the house of God for the benefit of all members and for the propagation of the gospel anything beyond this is not in accordance with the Bible. As we could see in the Acts of Apostles the early Xtians surrendered all their properties to be shared among all members and to finance the Gospel, there was no mention of Peter or any other Apostles takling a lion share or going for the best donkey to transport himself all under the pretence of evangelising.

Which ever way you look at it the truth is that many of our so called men of God has lost their main vission, if there are poor people in the church who couldn't feed themselves or are jobless the pastors will be very insensitive to go about in private jets especially if the money used for such jets are contributed by the church members. IMO

This is the sort of crippling fear that shows how deeply people are afraid of criticizing pastors.
If you leave God to judge them and it turns out that there was no God to judge them in the first place, what then? That would simply mean that these people have managed to come to the earth, scooped up your money and lived a lavish lifestyle at the expense of poor people and other gullible people.
So, leaving it to God is a poor option since we've seen how consistently God fails to do anything about such immoral acts.

People are committing fraud and stealing funds and we should leave it to God to judge (as, they usually say, "only God can judge"wink.

Maybe we should also close down parts of our courts that deal with fraud/stealing and not waste precious funds since we should leave it to God to judge. undecided

If you think it is not a crime to be rich off people's donations to church, you need your head examined.

Actually, scrap that.

You need your head blown off.

People should be rich off their entrepreneurial work, or off their salary, from legitimate and visible businesses. Be it Xtian or Rastafarian!

Show me the legitimate businesses they personally own that is providing them with the funds to have multiple jets, a stretch of expensive cars, VI Mansions and thousand dollar suits.

Please whilst you are at it, remember that the luxury jets they so much love and are using cost $36m to buy, not to even talk of cost of operating. I will not even factor the cost of the others for now.

So you really have to show me a business that is significant and will likely be in in FTSE 250 or above. The only business I know that these people have are churches which are operating by, and its main revenue is from, tithes.

You are free to prove me wrong.

I wait for your evidence.

What a mooooron!

So you are basically defending them by stating they invested their time and money in a profitable business that they are now, after years, reaping the rewards and we are jealous enemies by saying religion should not be a business.

So people should go into ministering to make money?

What an utter buffoon!
