He quite rose to his potential and was very successful contributing and winning many silverware at his club and the nation's cup with Nigeria.

Messi is a special player that comes once in a while hence it won't be fair using Messi as a yardstick for the potential of players like Angel Dimaria, Agwuero, etc having played in the same youth team and senior team. They too were successful in their respective careers just as Mikel was.

N.B I quite understand we would've loved to see the offensive minded Mikel who played in the youth competition in 2005 but the club he was had other instructions and position for him which he did excellently well for about 10 coaches at Chelsea.

Mikel was king of simple passing. English football is define by maximizing roles. Its very structural play. Unlike Spain were everyone is alowed to run dribble and score. England is very beurucractic and roles are strictly defined.

Mikel was an average player who knew role football very well. His position play in the center is second to non. He is a dream holding playing for any defender who needs cover.


With him you know what you getting as a coach. I mean exactly what you getting. You not getting exotic dribble, dashing runs overhead kicks or defense splitting pass. No! But you not getting loose passes, over elaborate skills, unecessary trial long balls
that make you loose possession easy.. You just get simple short pass and retain ur possessions. Once you get his play, You get him and you know how to utilize him.

That's why he stayed in Chelsea longer than most greats. he was a "simple" player nothing more.

For a player that won major honours with club and country? Mikel played a crucial role in all his teams trophy winning seasons. Mikel rose to his full potential given what he had to work with and he's a legend in his own right, Taye Taiwo on the other hand is a different case.
