As a career starter, taking pride in your work is undoubtedly important. It shows a strong work ethic, commitment to quality, and dedication to excellence. However, there is a thin line between taking pride in one's work and being overconfident. From a practical experience, you may feel so proud of a piece of work you have done and dedicated a lot of time to and by the time that work comes under review, you may be asked to make some changes to reflect the perspective of others. That is not in any way saying that your work is subpar or bad and that should not reduce your feeling of personal achievement. You should therefore not feel like your work cannot be corrected or that your approach or method is the best out there. Overconfidence will lead to blindness: you will not be able to see yourself from a factual point of view, your flaws and your inadequacies. Guess what? If you don't see it, you can't work on it and if you don't work on it, you can't grow into that next version of yourself. If there is no formal review process with your work, you should go out of your way to ask others to have a look and give you some feedback; this is how you will continue to grow. Take pride in your work and also have an open mind to learn. |

PERSONAL INCOME TAX (PIT) PART ONE 📌 Overview PIT is levied on the income of individuals (including employees, Partnerships, communities, families) in Nigeria. The principal basis of the PIT is residency. Employees’ PAYE taxes are payable in the state in which the employee is resident, hence, PAYE taxes should be remitted to the respective tax authorities (RTA) in such state of residence. However, the FCT IRS (Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service) covers taxes for employees resident in the FCT. In addition, the FIRS covers PAYE taxes for; a) Staff of the Nigeria armed forces and staff of the Nigeria Police Force b) Ministry of the foreign affairs c) Persons resident outside Nigeria who derive income or profit from Nigeria 📌 Income chargeable Income derived from any salary, wages fees, allowances, other gains or profit from employment including gratuities, compensations, bonuses, premiums, benefits in kind (BIK) provided to an employee by an employer. 📌 Exempt Income All income earned by individuals are liable to tax except the exemption granted under schedule 3 of PITA. Some of them include: a) Compensation for loss of employment. b) Gratuities payable to an employee. c) Income from dividend, interest, rent, royalties, fees, commission earned from abroad and brought into Nigeria by a Nigerian resident in convertible currency via a domiciliary account. d) Interest on foreign currency domiciliary account. e) Death gratuities or consolidated compensation for death or injuries. f) Reimbursable expenses. In addition, Paragraph 2 of the sixth schedule of PITAM specifies that the following deductions are tax exempt; a) National Housing Fund contribution b) National Health Insurance Scheme c) Life assurance premium d) National Pension scheme e) Gratuities However, there are other reliefs applicable to employees based on section 33 of the Act. a) Consolidated relief allowance (CRA) This is available to all individual taxpayers in Nigeria. The CRA is 20% of employee’s gross income plus the higher of ₦200,000 or 1% of employee’s gross income. b) Interest on mortgage loan NOTE: Finance Act 2020 redefines the gross income for CRA purpose. Gross income now means “income from all sources less all non-taxable income, income on which no further tax is payable, tax-exempt items and all allowable business expenses and capital allowances. 📌 Applicable rates Employees in Nigeria are taxed on their worldwide income on a graduated rate from 7% to 24%. First ₦ 300,000 at 7% Next ₦ 300,000 at 11% Next ₦ 500,000 at 15% Next ₦ 500,000 at 19% Next ₦ 1,600,000 at 21% Above ₦ 3,200,000 at 24% NOTE: a) Expatriate employees are taxed at the same rate as local employees. b) Minimum tax rate is 1% of total income and this is payable where the PAYE tax payable by an enployee is less than the minimum tax. c) Minimum tax will not apply to taxpayers that earn National Minimum Wage or less. |
