Not everybody should go to Uni...

The World has changed.

Abroad, they get student loans, if you like go and study useless course, na you go use head carry am.

I have an Oyinbo friend that went to Oxford to study Literature!

He ended up working in a bookshop and then worked in a food shop...

An Oxford graduate!

He later had to go back to study Medicine.

There are Mechanics driving 100k Pound cars abroad, while graduates are working as receptionists.

You gast use your brain-- university is not for everyone.
interesting

But you know not everyone will study medicine or engineering? What do you see about someone who studied Geography in Nigeria with strong 2.1 and hoping to JAPA through graduate study MS or PhD in that same course. Does it worth it? Is there any prospects after school? Thanks

I don't understand.

I paid library fees
I paid for my hostel
I paid for my feeding
I paid for textbooks

So, how's tuition free in government schools?

Those fees you paid for are not tuition fee.

On your fee receipt breakdown, you will see all fees as stipulated. Mine was a state University, tuition fee was free but other fees made it xummulate to a few tens of thousands.

Tuition is different from those things u mentioned, if for instance, federal university are adding tuition fees, school fees will run into 500k or 700k

So all these years they didn't know until now?

Isn't the government supposed to subsidize it for the masses?

nope, government can no longer afford to do FULL subsidy for the masses, the masses population can't keep exploding and the government keep paying

in advance countries they mostly borrow student loan to go to school, their government is not doing any FULL subsidy

the only business government should have with our school is building modern structures, libraries, research tools, research funds and putting all modern stuff a school need to function, not to be paying a never-ending wage bill of lecturers

student who can't afford school fees should borrow, when they start working they should pay back, the money they pay back will be lend to other younger generation student and the cycle continues, that's how the likes of cambridge, oxford etc runs

also students will think twice before doing nonsense course in school imagine subsidizing islamic studies, nursery and primary school education, and so so many useless courses which usually have thousands of students

We also need to improve the quality of who gets to university sef.

This idea of focus on quantity over quality is killing us. Especially in the North where cut off marks for their students are as low as 100 out of 400. How can 25% be a pass mark.

That's to tell you that students are in for a long ride. The enlightenment there is that the loan is ONLY for a yet to be introduced tuition fee.
All the others you listed up there will still be paid by the student or his sponsor. The loan does not cover those.
The idea is just like making students pay for the running of the schools. That's why Tinubu said no student will spend an extra year in school on account of strike.
You ain't seen nothing yet!!

I imagine g government will pay the tuition directly to the university an this will reflect on the student's account with government as a debt.
The money will not enter the student's hands

This places responsibility on student to decide whether it is worth going to university or going to learn work

Who is supposed to pay for the running of the schools? The person that went to do apprenticeship as mechanic?
I assume you went to school and understand elementary accounting, where is the money to run university to come from it not from students?

Tinubu is very brilliant.

At least, with the student loan, the youths that failed to payback would be recruited into the army as payback. Agbado and cassava go surplus.

50 million youths into the army, is here to stay.

Funny thing is that you can't japa unless you clear your student loan. Devil's gift

The highest I paid for Medicine in OAU was 19k in my first year.

The rest was below 15k.

Didn't spend up to 100k in all my years in School.

When I mention this abroad, my Oyinbi colleagues always feel like strangling me.

Their own student loan debts na die!

wonder233 you think this is sustainable, without our doctors leaving the country en-mass

That's where the 50 million youths recruitment comes in.

Tinubu will give you 10 and take 100.

Why should a hairdresser that didn't go to university pay tax to subsidise university?
Taxes are not infinite and different taxpayers have different priorities

Whatever it is, can the Universities be allowed to be autonomous? FG shouldn't be dictating the price of tuition and other stuff.
Lastly, the student loan act wasn't well planned and may likely end up as this government trying to score cheap points.
