swagana:How can someone deny their identity on purpose? |
Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by swagana: 9:52am On Feb 28 |
bantilosha: It could be for political or economic reasons when the said identity is not favourable to them. Peter the Rock denied Jesus on purpose to save his life. Take for example in Rivers state,Obigbo LGA was previously under East Central(Southeast)state which Gowon created in 1967 then were all Igbos and identify as such until Imo state was created in 1976 and they were part of Imo state so was Egbema until boundary adjustment happened and they were carved into Rivers state in 1976,does that change their ethnicity? If they are claiming anything else today that is politics many of them were born as Imo state citizens, in fact Governor Sam Mbakwe went to court to get them back but failed. |

aribisala0:r u saying other Igbo group colonized them and it’s why they speak on different dialects? The same way British colonized America to what we now call American accents?? |
Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by aribisala0(m): 11:28am On Feb 28 |
Ttipsy:I am saying no one knows What we know from research is that there is a family of lanbcalled called Igboid and That in That family all languages bare not dialects of the other rather they have a common root. It is called Igboid BECAUSE Igbo speakers are the largest group in terms of population Not for any other reason There is a family of Languages called Romance Italian Spanish Portuguese,French etc They share some names in common E.g Roberto, Ronaldo,Maria,Christiano,Paula,Andrea,Davido, etc No one group can claim.landfill these names That is one way to think about it |

aribisala0:it still drag you back to your previous argument. Mind you weither you speak American accent or British accent you are still speaking English. Hence American have another word for “Come” that differs from how British say it . |
Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by aribisala0(m): 11:44am On Feb 28 |
Ttipsy:That was Not the argument just an illustration I suggest you go and study the classification of Igboid languages by Kay Williamson The first author of an igbo dictionary and foremost authority. If yo.u are not familiar with her work You really are out of your depth here There is difference between a dialect and a related language A related language may be intelligible in one direction e.g many Portuguese speaker s understand Spanish though many Spanish speakers Do not not grasp Portuguese Intelligibility is not what makes one a dialect of another |

Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by aribisala0(m): 11:51am On Feb 28 |
Ttipsy:That is not relevant Actually it is a stupid question Why not ask what part of America I am from or what part of Spain? Kay WIlliamson was white but she published an Igbo dictionary based on Onitsha dialect |
Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by Ttipsy(f): 11:52am On Feb 28 |
aribisala0:you still consider intelligibility as part of your argument So tell us the coronation on the word “come “ in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian languages that should be a first observation Word might be similar but relatively can be understood by the wider population of the same language speakers. |

Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by Ttipsy(f): 11:54am On Feb 28 |
aribisala0:not silly and childish less you are trying to avoid the questions You established an arguments and you should have better prove |
Re: A Short Message For Those Who Bear Igbo Names But Don't Identify As Igbos. by aribisala0(m): 11:56am On Feb 28 |
Ttipsy:I actually have not said anything about ethnic classification I talked about linguistic classification Linguistics is an academic pursuit and has nothing to do with where I am from The number one authority on linguistics in much of the old Eastern region was a woman called Kay WIlliamson. Her published works are the main source of what I know |
