What we know from research is that there is a family of lanbcalled called Igboid
and That in That family all languages bare not dialects of the other rather they have a common root.
It is called Igboid BECAUSE Igbo speakers are the largest group in terms of population
Not for any other reason

There is a family of Languages called Romance
Italian Spanish Portuguese,French etc
They share some names in common
E.g Roberto, Ronaldo,Maria,Christiano,Paula,Andrea,Davido, etc

No one group can claim.landfill these names

There is difference between a dialect and a related language

A related language may be intelligible in one direction e.g many Portuguese speaker s understand Spanish though many Spanish speakers Do not not grasp Portuguese

Intelligibility is not what makes one a dialect of another
