I guesssed i've not had the opportunity to grin.  Nigeria has a very bad image outside; thanks to the 419ers, fraudsters, ritualists and our leaders who disgrace us all. Most people who travel with a nigerian passport are looked down upon, the innocent ones suffer for this. Opening a bank account abroad using a Nigerian passport is very difficult. Quite a number of Nigerians now own Ghanian passports

If u ever find yourself abroad, be very careful of the Nigerians you meet. They could put u in trouble
Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by Hoteph(m): 3:15am On Oct 19, 2009
Yeah l can't even count the number of times l did it and l can't promise you that l will never do it again, The name Nigeria sucks our leaders have failed us so we Nija in diaspora dont want to be identified with the name Nigeria cos its such a bad luck.
Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by canuck(m): 3:19am On Oct 19, 2009
Nope. . .Even when the questioner says, "Are you Jamaican/Carribean?", which happens quite often.

I see them swallow hard and blood drain from their faces though when they hear me proclaim, "No, I'm Nigerian" I love doing it! cheesy
Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by THEAMAKA(f): 3:22am On Oct 19, 2009
i cant believe all these people will deny where they are from just for the sake of saving their faces.
if the person doesnt like you, so what!
why are you so worried about pleasing others or trying to look good for whoever.
why should they look down on you because you are a nigerian? anyone with correct sense would know not to judge ALL people based on what others are doing.
are those the type of people you want to impress anyway? someone who wont like you or look at you weird because of the place of your origin?
to hell with them then, screw them!

no one should have to deny themselves just too look good for others, or who are they trying to look good for? Mr. Whitey?

Here are plausible reasons, not an exhaustive list, why I think one may not fly the Nigerian flag abroad:

1) You are an illegal undocumented immigrant
2) You are low on the totem pole (social status)
3) You still hate your parents for flying back to Naija (from the UK, US, etc), on the 9th-month of your pregnancy grin
4) You are a "runnings" kinda guy/gal (i.e. fraudster)
5) You just don't want to be responsible for unpredictable 150 million Nigerians
6) You just watched a 3-day CNN Special - Nigerian Frauds In America (Yeye CNN!)
7) You "escaped" from Naija, and don't want anything to do with her

. . .And the list goes on.

Not good enough reasons though, IMHO.

Yes, and I will deny her again whenever the need arises.

Only rich spoiled kids with dual citizenship who doesnt know what it's like to use the Nigerian passport will insult people for denying Nigeria.
I lost a huge business deal when some chinese merchants found out that I was Nigerian. They opted for a Ghanaian.
Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by velmaN(f): 4:22am On Oct 19, 2009
Well, I have never denied my great country and I pray I never would. There was an incidence that happened though and it made me wonder what in d world is going on. I had a tailor from Zimbabwe, here in America sew my naija material (skirt and blouse). Well she called me and said it was completed, I dragged my tired self and drove (after working like 7 days straight with no day off) to her house, got my dress and offered her a check. She refused the check and said she only takes cash. Her reason I will put in quote "A while back I sewed clothes for a Nigerian lady who was getting married, I sewed all their Nigerian clothes and the cost was about $600, she wrote me a check and she canceled the check before I could cash it, meanwhile the Nigerian lady had left the city with no forwarding address". So she never got her money from all the hard work. I was speechless and embarrassed. Needless to say I drove to the ATM to get the money.

So have I ever denied my country? NO. Are there people who are just bad eggs? YES. And these people have risen the bar for other good Nigerians abroad to prove that there are hardworking, good, honest, loving, intelligent, compassionate, fun-loving and amazing Nigerians all over the world.

GBAM!!
but when she said there was once this Nigerian lady, i dont think she was saying it was because the lady was Nigerian.
maybe she was just telling the story and saying why she doesnt accept checks anymore.
i dont think it was because the lady was nigerian, but the lady so happened to be Nigerian.
and ever since then she doesnt take checks.
had a ghanaian, senegalese, gambian, or anyone like that done it, i think it would be the same scenario.
Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by TruMantra(m): 4:35am On Oct 19, 2009
Wow VelmaN, that Nigerian woman is the exact reason why we have a bad reputation. I hope that the fact that you paid cash has started to change the tailor's opinion of us. And to think that the lady swindled a tailor over her wedding clothes. That's a bad seed to sow into her marriage, if she was actually getting married that is.

Back to the topic though. I have never denied Nigeria and I have no intentions of doing so. I've lived outside Nigeria for a little over a year and I am convinced that the folk here would be no different from Nigerians if they lived under the same conditions. Having the right infrastructure and policies in place truly helps.

For those that say that they have denied Naija, I say, you have a right to do as you please based on your opinion but it would be a whole lot better if instead of turning your back on your roots, you work to open the eyes of foreigners to the fact that the majority of Nigerians are decent, honest individuals who have been dealt a bad hand and are doing the best they can to live with it.

Ask yourself this question.

If a majority of Nigerians are rogues and 419 scam artists, then most of your friends and family would be criminals wouldn't they? And I am willing to bet that if you go through your list of friends and family, you will find more honest, regular individuals than Yahoo boys.

Just my 2 cents, or I should say 2 kobo.

In my childhood, I would line up in school assembly and all of us would recite "I Pledge to Nigeria my Country"
Do you think all of that will just wipe away, naaaah
I will never deny the only country I have

Dude, I've never denied being Nuzo and will never do that to please anybody. But I know for sure that I will deny being Nigerian if it has to prevent me from getting what is due to me.
And yes, only very rich people and kids with dual citizenship will proud themselves as Nigerians in critical situation simply because, they dont have anything to lose.

As for pleasing the whiteman or Chinese. . . . . when did that become a sin?

Keep living in lalaland. Everyone knows that one has to be on red alert when dealing with Nigerians.
The percentage of fraudsters in these group of people is nothing compared to Nigerians.

My guy leave am alone, these are rich kids who have never had the opportunity to go through what we went through in naija so they tend to be the most overtly patriotic and nationalistic than those who've lived almost there entire lives in Naija. If the girl had the opportunity live the life i lived in my childhood, trust me she no go dey open mouth talk abeg.

Tru Mantra:

It wont change the tailor's opinion cos VelmaN was forced to pay in cash. The kind Zimbabwean woman didnt give her any opportunity to prove that she was different from other nigerians. I wouldnt if I were her.

And to think that the lady swindled a tailor over her wedding clothes. That's a bad seed to sow into her marriage, if she was actually getting married that is.

Stop being naive. An average Nigerian fraudster does not give a hoot. grin

I've lived outside Nigeria for a little over a year and I am convinced that the folk here would be no different from Nigerians if they lived under the same conditions. Having the right infrastructure and policies in place truly helps.

I'm proud of you for having kept the flag flying, but shame on you for making excuses for fraudulent Nigerians due to the conditions in nigeria. Or, are you telling me that you are also a criminal because of the environment you came from?

For those that say that they have denied Naija, I say, you have a right to do as you please based on your opinion but it would be a whole lot better if instead of turning your back on your roots, you work to open the eyes of foreigners to the fact that the majority of Nigerians are decent, honest individuals who have been dealt a bad hand and are doing the best they can to live with it.

Whenever I have the opportunity to do this, I do it with pleasure. And I do it by my lifestyle and not by mere words or sticking a nigerian flag on my door.

Ask yourself this question.

If a majority of Nigerians are rogues and 419 scam artists, then most of your friends and family would be criminals wouldn't they? And I am willing to bet that if you go through your list of friends and family, you will find more honest, regular individuals than Yahoo boys.

Are we now prophets to know what people actually do in their private time?
Having said that, I cant deny that I have some acquaintances who I suspect are into fraudulent activities. And they know when and where the borderline is between I and them.

She has never been to Naija not to talk of living there. It will also interest you to know that she is first an American and secondly a Nigerian cos of her surname.
I can bet she doesnt have a Nigerian passport and if you doubt that, ask her which passport she uses to travel or register for stuffs?

Maybe she stopped taking checks after the incidence, I have no idea. All I know is she was swindled by a Nigerian, I happened to be a Nigerian (coincidence maybe or maybe not) tough luck. I know I paid cash.

I. The brand names you mentioned are out for business with their shows.
2. The likes of the nigerian woman who swindled the Zimbabwean give them the opportunities to take nigerians to the cleaners from time to time.
3. Did they lie or are you expecting them to cover up our dirty lifestyle to their own detriment?

She is calling me a sell out because I refuse to associate with evil, but she regards herself as a real nigerian even when she has lived her entire life being an AMERICAN and only knows how to spell Imo state through Nairaland.

What a joke! grin

Now, tell nairalanders which passport you used when travelling to your imaginary Imo state? cheesy

so all Nigerians are evil, right? why are you feeding into this stereotype. instead of you to prove them wrong you are joining the parade. pure rubbish!

there are PLENTY and i say PLENTY of NIGERIANS that have lived in America their whole life and can still identify with Nigeria. so what is your point? are you jealous?
so are they all "fake" Nigerians as well. see yourself.
what about all the Mexicans born in America. are they then "fake" Mexicans because they werent born on Mexican soil?
you are so laughable!
you sound like you are just angry at the world!! lol

i actually have both passports,
but im going to keep flying me blue passport high. grin
or is that why you are angry? what is it with you and this passport thing. this has nothing to do with denying Nigeria.

but its hilarious how you keep saying i havent been to Nigeria, please tell me what thread and quote my post.
i have no reason to lie. tongue
