I apologize for the long post... So the thing is, I am 22 years old currently in 200 level. My performance is very poor, in fact I'm currently on probation(I'm suppose to be in 300 level by now) and that's not because I'm not intelligent or I'm dull o. it's just that i don't show commitment towards my studies because I've completely lost interest in the course I'm currently studying because of its calculation aspect. I hate calculations a lot. Let me say, I'm more of a theory person. I have tried applying for change of course but i was denied maybe because of my poor performance. My Father doesn't know anything about this. "no issues at all Daddy, my result is good", my response whenever he asked me about my result.

So i have finally decided to apply for withdrawal from my current school to register and sit for jamb again. This time i will apply for a course in a different institution. This course in question is a course I've wanted to study long ago but my current school don't offer it. My friend studies it and I've done research on the course my self. I'm very sure i can do it this time.

Now i don't even know how to approach my father with this. I know I've fvcked up big time. The man will be so so annoyed and disappointed in me but i can't continue like this, i want to get things on track, i want to fix my life and start afresh. Right now I'm just confused and frustrated. Nairalanders, i will need your advice and suggestions. Please what's your take on this?

How are you sure that you won't LOOSE Interest in the next one? Why not pick up courage. With determination, you might even get a pass or even third class.

My advice for you is to be more focus in the new course you want to study.

You know how your dad will feel having spent so much money on you with the calculations that in the next 2 yrs it will be over.

It's not easy with parents. It costs so much to train a child.

Nevertheless, it's expedient to express your frustrations before it becomes disastrous.

He's your father, he will definitely be dejected but he won't disown you. Go through your mum or any of your siblings that is close to him.

You should however be more serious and learn from your experience.

I want to believe that at the end the family will be happy for you again.

All the best.

I was in a similar situation in 2007 though I was 17 years old in one of the private uni. Took me about a year to convince my parents but they didn’t agree. I took the SAT exams and secured admission at a university near Baltimore . Tried one more time to convince my parents . Later found that they were hesitant because they felt leaving school to stay at home was sort of embarrassing but since I had an offer letter they supported me with visa processing fees and eventually paid my Tuition and supported me all through . I eventually graduated with a good grade and life has been good (despite one or two challenges which I think is normal). While your graduating grade may not be the defining factor of your life I think in the Nigerian society a bad grade makes it difficult to secure a job in a blue chip company at entry point . Look at the bigger picture

INTEREST and ABILITY matters in a course....The thing I hated that time in LASU studying Mathematics was the abstract questions they set eg Prove that....

I come finally change to Physics that I like since it is more logical in terms of reasoning and calculations. That is after almost 3 years in Mathematics....I now started from yr 2 while my mates moved to yr 4.....

I UNDERSTAND you perfectly.

....But, you didn't state the course you like.

Hello. Well its never too late to catch up with your studies and don't abandon the one you have now, you can give at least 5-10 hours to catch up and graduate with a fair result. Then after graduation write Jamb again get admission to study what you want nothing bad having two degrees. Use this to your advantage look at the brighter side. Failure is a stepping stone to success.

So let me drop this advice for you; choose your course or studies based on your future career. Nobody is dumb until he or she agrees that he or she is dumb. Mathematics is hard but very simple.Just see it as a game, and you will love it. Learn to play with figures and equations.
The calculations that you are running away from today, you will still need in future no matter your future career, even ashawoo work needs calculations to avoid stories that touch.

not everyone is good with calculations,no matter how hard they try.
That is why some secondary schools do exams to separate students based on their brain and subject strength in jss3.
Everyone has their area of strength.....
If calculations is not his thing, trying to teach him how to go about it now is a bit late..... U master it well at primary or secondary school.

What is the real reason you wish to change. Is it because of your poor performance or you have a passion elsewhere? Can't you out in more effort in your current course? It's best you understand the problem first to avoid further mistakes.

But I'd advise that you follow your heart, after much discernment of course. 22 years is still quite Young. It's better to stop and rectify a mistake, than to continue in error.
i want to change because i have passion elsewhere and honestly i can't put more on my current performance.. I'm exhausted

Pls go back and start again...I will advice u not to go back to your parent house because of shame on both u and your parents , look for another place u can stay to preparing very hard for the next jamb , put all ur efforts , forget the past u can't change and think about the future because u still have enough time to handle it... You shouldn't withdraw from the University yet. Write Jamb, and get the admission first before you withdraw. I went through the same process.

I did pre-degree many years ago, and I wasn't given my desired course (Mechanical Engineering). I was given Horticulture after the program. I accepted the admission. I wrote Jamb again while I was in 100level horticulture. In fact, I chose the same university, and wrote post-utme in the same university. I was given Mechanical Engineering after the admission exercise. On the other hand, I tried to get a transfer to Mechanical Engineering from Horticulture but my Dean didn't want to release his best student; he did not even want to see me. I didn't apply for withdrawal from the or the University, I just left the department and accepted the new admission which came with a different matric no. What the University recognize is your matric no. I was expelled from Horticulture 2 sessions after I left because of poor academic performance (I wasn't paying school fees or writing exams, I just left). I graduated as a Mechanical Engineer many years ago. Follow your dream, pay the price.

Do this course with all diligence, then go for the course of your choice when you want to do your masters.

My own candid opinion is that you will still perform on the average or below average on the new course of study you are applying for, you indeed show no sign of commitment in your first course of study that you are backing out from, school activities had carried you to oblivion, a very good average and dedicated student would have done better than all what you have done, at least there are lot of student who chooses courses of of the decipline they study in secondary school and are excelling even more than those who makes it there course of studies, so also you are using a foul word as "bleeped UP" What's the meaning of all this, either you study theory or not you will still be on average or below average, because you show know sign of commitment and your father will be highly disappointed in you, and also lose trust in you for all your many likes to him for the past 2 to 3 years of your course of studies, after he has been asking you how is school and your studies of wish you have been telling him fine and the poor man/woman has being labouring hard to see you through school, they will be highly disappointed and will never be proud of you again. My candid opinion.

I will advice you not to give up on your present course of study. Yes! You may wish to change your course or outrightly put in for another course with less calculation or no calculations. I was having the same issue when I was in the university. I wanted to go for international relations but immediately I heard mathematics is a prerequisite. The ambition died down, I was eyeing Law and during this period my school also stipulate I must seat for mathematics in JAMB and UTME. I was sad I waived it again. Put in for Political science that requires no mathematics or any calculations. Lo and behold I was offered public administration and I have to battle statistics in 200level. Well I narrowly escaped carry over scored 45 D in first semester 200l and an E second semester. Thats my only E throughout my stay on campus. A friend of mine that wanted another course outside psychology that he was given and put in for law without paying school fee was denied Law at the long run and Psychology almost went down the dust. Up till date he's no a graduate and I graduated 2018. My advice now for you is to take another jamb. Pay your normal school fee, work harder in your present course. You can still turn the table for Good while you pursue your dream course with lesser or no calculation. Don't quit when you don't have alternative. Secure one at hand while going for the other. Remain blessed

Your dad may be angry, disappointed, mad, but certainly won't disown or kill you. Call him, tell him everything and the struggles you have endured all this while. Trust me, after the initial tantrums he may put up, eventually, he will support and assist you. Just be sure your decision is something you are ready to commit to.

Sometimes the greatest decisions require the strongest will.

I support your advice but why did he accept a course he knew he can't cope with? Accepting to study the course was the beginning of your problem. I just pray your father will give u another opportunity to make things right this time. Best wishes.

I was 21 when I withdrew from school too because I was doing a course I didn't like, that was in 300level. I am currently enjoying my new course now without doubt.... I did it, you can too... just believe in yourself and stay away from negative people

After 4years in the university i couldn't graduate cos of carry overs and I'm about to apply 4 jamb this year cos i won't allow this first degree unfulfillment deter me from pursuing my dreams.

If i quickly notice i won't graduate from 300 level wen my carry over problems started, i would have fill another school with another course and today i would have been in my 300 level but i couldn't rather i ended up wasting more 3years hoping i will write and pass my carryovers and upto this moment I'm still at home hoping God will put a smile on my face with another admission this year.

Just go ahead and inform ur parents. It wasn't easy for me to let mine know my predicament too but i had to man up and tell them and it ended it up they didn't kill me but only got dissapointed however, today they are willing to still support me through school and see me graduate. I'm not dull so are other people with carryovers, it's juet a matter of one issue or another that mar us into such mess. It's well!
thanks man! Your comment means alot.
