I think most companies have increased their age limit to around 28 for grad trainees.
What industry is your target?

Good evening Nairalanders

I write to seek your view on My current situation.

I am a final year student in one of the best Federal university in Nigeria(Name withheld) and certainly, will be graduating with a second class upper within the 4 point range CGPA.( I was on a first class cgpa But my cgpa was slashed no thanks to my department I was a victim as well as others)

My worry is, I will be 26 years when i eventually write my final paper as a student then come service(NYSC) by then 27 max after service. No thanks to COVID- 19 pandemic and ASUU which engulfed my chances of graduating below the 26 age bracket.

In light of the above, Do I stand a chance of securing a graduate trainee position in top multinational organization requesting for 2.1 and above within the age bracket of 26 and below post NYSC,Given that after my service I will be 27.

Ps:I am an accounting student and I intend to start my ICAN exam during service.

My current CGPA is 4.20 ,resuming for my final year come July this year.

go and learn a good digital skill. Nobody cares about your grade anymore. It's about what you can do

Plan and pray for the future but don't worry, don't get yourself worked up. The age limit for some graduate trainee program is 28 years. You can apply for those.

Start your ICAN program as soon as you can.

Then, get hands on experience, you can do that during service, so you can have a practical experience to the theory you were taught in school. Never be afraid of starting small.

Also network, join LinkedIn and set up a good profile.

Never forget that the Lord is your help, I wish you the best.

the chance may be slim but it is very possible. But, look elsewhere too, grab an opportunity that is good enough to start as a stepping stone so that you can start gaining experience.

Hello friend, my advice will be to search yourself (inner man) and understand what exactly you really love to do or what you are passionate about (chattered accounting, photography, driving (uber), buying and selling, etc). Locate a sponsor or coach for the best training and direction. Then become an entrepreneur. Give yourself another two years, you will thank me for this advice - DO NOT DESPISE IT, PLEASE! Believe in yourself, my friend.

Are you stylishly trying to boast or what

This your question no make sense at all.

At 26 with a 2.1 and you are worrying about Job. Guy finish first otherwise worry go deflate that your GP go 2.2

By the way I finished with a 2.2 at that same age.....finished NYSC at 27. Got a Management Trainee position at 28.......Management trainee ooo not Graduate Trainee......

Have you gone to find out the average age of your mates?

If you like be holding yourself back with stupid unnecessary fears. You will turn 35 and be envious of those in your age now.

My advice.....

Before you finish NYSC, make sure your company retains you as long as it is not a school. Even if na one man business and you are practising your accounting, make sure they retain you for at least 1 more year.

Your NYSC service year will give you 1 year job experience. With that, your age and CGPA will give you an edge for Canada Express Entry. The experience will add to that score and the fact that you are still employed will add up.

That is what you should do. If you like dull yourself. Age 40 comes with lightening speed

Did you ask what course did the first class holder studied...

I'm pretty sure it would be a course that isn't much needed in the market.

And also a 1st class holder in any field of study will never ride okada, maybe some other brown collar job but not okada, pls be more realistic...

Once you are above 26, you will not even meet the criteria to apply for graduate trainee jobs, not to talk of being invited for aptitude test.

When it comes to graduate trainee, Age is the major determinant, next is minimum second class upper.
They don't care about your school or CGPA. I am talking from experience.

I am replying you again because I wish I had someone who drummed it in my head then.

Even at age 28......you still have plenty of time. PLEEENTYYYYY. The bad thing is that you don't realize it until its too late.

Don't let failures deceive you.

You don't need a graduate trainee job. Even a bank teller job is good enough.

Just focus on developing yourself with certifications and training.

Focus on Audit certifications. Look towards Corporate Governance.

Target any good firm that advertises entry-level positions. Throw your applications aka apply like a madman. The most important is to be extremely good at acing aptitude tests. That is where the majority are dropped. If out of 10, you ace 8, your chances of getting a job are very high.

I got a graduate trainee Job at 27, still working at the same firm now. You're still young enough. It's the massive unemployment and labour market competition that makes employers bring that age hurdle. Some employers don't have age restrictions some have higher age restriction like 30 years. Forward is the only way..

If im you, I will be more interested in defining my own future and that is one in which age is not a barrier. Invest in gmat and shl tests, try to serve with an accounting big 4 and start your ican.

The only person that can stop you is you.

You did the right course especially when you put the Nigerian labour market into consideration. It's easier to get a job if you are an accounting graduate and it’s going to be a plus for you if you have ICAN before you finished your NYSC.

To answer your question, Do I stand a chance of securing a graduate trainee position in a top multinational organization requesting for 2.1 and above within the age bracket of 26 and below post-NYSC, Given that after my service I will be 27?

Multinational organization, 27 years after NYSC, and 2:1.
Yes, PWC
will be your best bet.

The following are my guides for you:
1. Endeavour that your PPA during the NYSC is a place where you have time for yourself. The best places could be Ministries and Secretariats (LGA, State, or Federal).
2. Draw a realistic timetable for your ICAN exam and aptitude Test. Maybe 3 days for ICAN and 2 days for aptitude test preparation/practice in a week. PWC uses SHL format, I can send you pdf files if you don’t mind. Also, you need to practice situational judgment questions.
3. Work on your presentation skills and develop your skills on how to work in a team. You will need these skills during an assessment centre after you scale through the stage of the aptitude test.
4. Start what I said above early into your service year. The quality of your life you will get after NYSC is directly proportional to the time you invested preparing during the NYSC.
5. NYSC is not time to play away your time but it's an avenue to strategies how your future will be. Please mingle well with people, and socialize, but don't let anything take away your 5 days of studying for your ICAN and aptitude test from you.
6. Save some portion of your NYSC allowance, I believe by the 9th month you should be able to pay for the ICAN exam yourself.
7. Don't underestimate anyone during the service year. Lest of people you don't expect might be the ones to give you the link to climb the ladder to the top.
8. Be prayerful. Nothing is certain in this life. Apart from your sound academic performance, and the skills your developed, you need a bit of grace (luck) to achieve your goals and dreams.
9. Finally, “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy (Romans 9:16).” Again, pray for grace and mercy. You need them in your journey in life.

I wish you the best in the remaining time of your undergraduate studies, service year, and journey in life.

Dear OP,

Keep doing what you are doing: complete your program, register for your ICAN, get hands-on experience, improve your skills in line with your profession, but hear this....

As you are doing all of the above, jejely be packaging your transcript, start parley with your lectrurers for recommendation letters, start scouting schools in the US and probably start prepping your mind for GMAT/GRE.

I'm using the US as a case study because it is where I know you can comfortably get scholarships and funding to study. Over here, nobody discriminates you based on your age, everyone is welcomed: young and old. And remember, you don't need to complete or even start your NYSC to travel.

All the best!
