Don't bother yourself about Graduate Trainee opportunities, rather focus on being knowledgeable, technically sound and highly adaptable. You will definitely get a good job after you graduate especailly if you become a chartered accountant.

You will make it!

To the original poster, the above is the best advice you well get on here. You need to open your mind and forget about Grad Trainee tests. You sound like a cleaver guy, all you need is determination and self belief and you will defnitly make it. There are loads of in demand skills from finance to tech, find an area you like and upskil in it. You'll be fine

Good evening Nairalanders

I write to seek your view on My current situation.

I am a final year student in one of the best Federal university in Nigeria(Name withheld) and certainly, will be graduating with a second class upper within the 4 point range CGPA.( I was on a first class cgpa But my cgpa was slashed no thanks to my department I was a victim as well as others)

My worry is, I will be 26 years when i eventually write my final paper as a student then come service(NYSC) by then 27 max after service. No thanks to COVID- 19 pandemic and ASUU which engulfed my chances of graduating below the 26 age bracket.

In light of the above, Do I stand a chance of securing a graduate trainee position in top multinational organization requesting for 2.1 and above within the age bracket of 26 and below post NYSC,Given that after my service I will be 27.

Ps:I am an accounting student and I intend to start my ICAN exam during service.

My current CGPA is 4.20 ,resuming for my final year come July this year.

I do not have an answer to your question however, I am concerned by you hiding the name of your university and downplaying the slashed CGPA. You are indirectly endorsing a bad action.

I will advise you to go get a skill after your schooling if possible use your NYSC year to do that.

Many companies have stretched the age to 27/28. You still stand a chance.

The truth here is that there are millions of graduates out there like you. Many are still jobless because of lack of employment.

You might think you are special until reality steps in. All you need to do is to research a business that can fetch you money. It's not a must that every graduate must get a bank job or work in NNPC.

Start finding out what you have a passion for. Many people will tell you to learn this and that but they will never ask you if you have the means.

You need to make money or save up first before doing any other things, except you have sponsors.

A bricklayer that builds houses for people makes about 30k daily. In a month, that's about 900k

A graduate earns 50-150k a month. ( For starters)

Start from somewhere and develop yourself.

Most people on FP fail to have forgotten how Nigeria works when it comes to employment.

These comments are quite funny, You are worrying about your age?, And graduate training job and you said you made 2:1, or u are on your way to 2:1. I'm ashame to see you coming to nairaland to post this...
My advice for you is to think outside your 2:1 and your graduate trainee job.
Think smart, accounting is a professional course, go for ICAN, learn skills related to the profession.
And stop thinking like a lazy man, relocate to Lagos, Abuja, or PH.. apply to jobs... If u have money, after u may have acquired skills, diversify... By starting a business, why u still apply to juicy jobs..

It's not bad. I would rate these social sciences courses in this order:
Accounting
Economics
Banking and Finance

We share similar story. I finished NYSC at 27years old.

I got into a graduate trainee in telecoms without altering my age on CV.

I'm doing well for myself now.

Ignore what anybody say. Believe in yourself, cos whether you like it or not, you can't get younger.

Once you are above 26, you will not even meet the criteria to apply for graduate trainee jobs, not to talk of being invited for aptitude test.

When it comes to graduate trainee, Age is the major determinant, next is minimum second class upper.
They don't care about your school or CGPA. I am talking from experience.

Has this your experience been with all Nigerian employers? For example, I know that as far back as 2013 NLNG had a maximum age of 28 for GTs.
They didn't state any maximum age for the current round of GT recruitment, but I expect that would remain unchanged internally. I know a lot of companies don't necessarily have 28 as maximum GT age but it does happen.

Pwc for about 3 years now no longer use age for graduate trainee. Ecobank is 27 and below. Every one cannot start at top companies. Many started from smaller companies and have worked their way up.

Don't be deceived that they don't. They may not mention it in their ad because of regulations against age discrimination, but this is Nigeria. They can screen you out on age without mentioning it

wow, that's impressive, how long did you have to learn for before you became profitable?

10 months before I quit my job, 8 months after
that is 1yr5 months to be profitable.

understand that my passion for forex and an even greater passion for freedom is 2000%

I sleep, think and breathe forex, I look at charts until my eye hurts, every single day,
I'm addicted to trading, I was willing to sacrifice everything, apart from God and my family, to get to where I am today,

Wow, omo shocked ... I've tried learning fx multiple times, but my get rich quick mentality and my inability to commit to the learning process has always been a deterrent to me becoming a profitable trader.

If I may ask, what strategy do you trade and what are your thoughts on the smart money concept

nothing wrong in trying to get rich quick, we all get into forex with that mindset, but having the ability to quickly change your mindset and believe in the process, and never giving up is what will make the difference..

I have nothing against smart money, if it works for you at the end of the day, great!!

I trade pure price action, I use the ATR indicator to determine my stoploss.. and I pull the trigger,

so far as you have a rigid risk Management, good strategy and you embrace losses,, you are good to go..

also do not understimate the power of backtesting, forward testing and screenshot all your bad and good trades....

the screenshot data will tell you what nobody else can tell you about your trading habits

P.S I still have my first screenshot I took on tradingview till date

Thank bro. But the issue of leaving Nigeria is the finance which I don’t have access to.

One other alternative would be a scholarship but I don’t have much information on how to go about it especially the free scholarship.

While some required I am done with my first degree before applying and other processes.
thegooddieyoung:

Broh congratulations on your 4.20 CGPA but just know that 2:1 and first class do not really guarantee a better life out there.
I might appear a little blunt but please by all means if you can, try write General GRE and leave this country.
The competition is really tough and the system is skewed against your age already.

My candid advice to you would be to think more about leaving Nigeria now that you are still young.

Where there is a will, there will be a way broh

graduated at age 22 with a 2.1 CGPA,,,, did my service at 23, got a job immediately in a bank, was earning well for 3 years..

but I quickly discovered that what I wanted in life is financial freedom..

started learning Forex, saved and quit my job 9months later, I am now making thousands of naira daily and on my terms

I will never work for anybody in my life till I die,,,

brother find your passion, and stick to it even if it seems difficult.... I'm currently 26 years old...

the world is your oyster, only you can change your life

P.S anyone who quotes me about forex, understand that I don't give a sh*t about your opinion, the money I've made in forex is what you can never give me your life....thanks
