I really don't know why people are in a hurry. Finishing school in an early age doesn't guarantee success

17/18 kwa?? No o. I was 15 going on 16 when I wrote mine. Back then only very few of us was older than 17. A very miniscule percentage, as a matter of fact. The vast majority were 15/16/17.

Reason many Nigerian kids who relocated abroad with their parents, are stepped down by a year or two when they are enrolled in schools there.

Education is like sports to some parents. It looks like they use their children as tools in their competitive journey against others. Many times those they seem to compete against are only minding their own businesses and living their lifes.

God help Nigeria. May the Lord give us the overhaul we desperately need.

This is wrong
Some children are exceptional and talking about sports
Sports too is education
If a 14 year old kid is good enough to play for Barcelona we won't have a problem
Pele,Mbappe were child prodigies in sport and played at the World Cup at 17

Not everyone must be educated in a formal school setting there are exceptional kids that need a bespoke education tailored to their needs. Some kids need to be home schooled if they are years ahead of their peers

Dream killers, the fact that your child is dumb does not mean others are too. Use ur position for good and not for witch hunting like buhari.

The issue is a simple one .
If a child is genuinely gifted to the extent e.g that he is doing university level mathematics at age 10 he needs special schooling
If you put him in the middle of adults his emotional development will suffer

So what is the solution
Certainly not the stupid ban ban ban approach that we like in Nigeria.
Rather recognition that the kid is special and make a tailor made education for him
That will teach him things like how to talk to girls and get pussy which he might not learn if he is not trained as well as other interpersonal skill training

Very true. Na poor people dem use d policy pull down.

It'll affect wider society as well. We need more geniuses. Not fewer.

I read this article on The Economist last week -- https://www.economist.com/briefing/2023/05/30/its-not-just-a-fiscal-fiasco-greying-economies-also-innovate-less . Use archive.vn to access it if you can spare the time.

One detail that stood out was disruptive vs incremental innovation and the identifiable relationship between innovation and age.

But for whatever reason, the Permanent Ret*rd want gifted kids to waste vital years being stunted as opposed to blossom in the company of intellectual peers. Like we don't have enough mouth-breathing "adults" who can't write a formal letter.

I'd put this PS on permanent administrative leave. The geriatric f*ckstain should be institutionalized for pushing this policy.

Totally agree. At age 8, I was already in JSS 1. At age 15, I was in 100L. I really struggled with understanding concepts and learning during my secondary school and early university days. I definitely won't allow my children get rushed through school.

No matter how smart, theor should be a standard. Even in the university, some students are extra ordinarily smarter than the others.

Their is no class in the educational system where everyone has the same brilliance, and that should not be a reason to be fast racking kids classes
the policy makes no meaning I for one see no reason why we should do ageism self whether old or Young everyone Good enough should get opportunity...

We don't live to argue. We live to learn. We can also pick the context of an opinion and contribute to it and make life less about proving a point.

All advanced countries I know of have school ages.

I have not used absolutes in my statements and have rightly used some and many. I have also not spoken against special talents or bespoke education, as I know these rare cases exist. However I believe the number writing exams beyond their ages exceed these rare talents. I and most of my friends ages ago did, and we were only quite intelligent but not exceptional, and have not discovered anything new till date.

There are national curriculums, both home and abroad, and almost everyone should follow those. There are the rare talents and certain autistic children who are laser sharp, the school is able to identify them, and give them waivers, after very strict and nationally accepted criterion are met.

Formal education is not a sport, Its primarily for independence, self reliance, and developing skills to cope in society and influence society.

I have not written to be wrong or right, but have written what I know in my conscience to be true under God's heaven.

If we all look beyond trying to argue and negate other people's opinion, maybe we would have less strive and contentions in our country that produces no real economic or social value, and maybe we would be able to prove we are really educated, as in education there are several correct pieces to a jigsaw puzzle and very few absolutes.

We talk about hypothesis and theories in philosophy and must throw away conceit and vain arguement and baseless contentions to add on to what we think we already know.

All the best and may the Lord be with and for you

The article presents his tirade as personal musings rather than official policy.

But this is Nigeria. It will not surprise me if it becomes official policy or enforced in certain school districts. Or be misinterpreted by parents and educators. Or the journalists failed to source the gazette or sth.

The core of the issue is that he should not be making such irresponsible statements to the media in the first place. He is a PS. He should wait until a Minister is appointed, then more consultation, and all that before we get an official correspondence from the FG. I'm pretty certain before it gets to the FEC, someone would have punched enough holes in the policy draft to sink a cruise ship.

Look at the advanced world as far as you are capable of writing the exam, you can go ahead. This part of the continent is very backward.

I think the main reason why some parent does that is bcus of some of the challanges (age) they faced during & after school. You're expected to finish school and have abt 5 yrs working experience bfr 30 in Nigeria. considering uni addmsn prblm, some courses could take abt 5 to 6 years in uni, ASUU STRIKE, and others. i dnt see whats wrng if at child of 7 to 9 years sit for common entrance exam and capable of performing excellently.

How is this difficult for you to comprehend?

It is possible that the kids were advanced by Nigeria's blithe education standards but do not quite measure up to the UK's.

The quality of education in good schools in the West is vastly superior to whatever our schools serve up (with the exception of elite private schools like Loyola).

What am saying is that all children should be allowed to develop at their pace, if one can pass the exams without problems, he should be matured enough to take the class.

I even think the curriculum is being lowered in this country to ensure that some people must pass.

True. Academics shouldn't be hinged on maturity. The seemingly matured ones might be struggling wrt their academics.

I remember taking the common entrance exam way back when I was in pry 5 with pry 6 kids at age 9 and coming out overall best.

It wasn't even my parents, my teachers then thought I was different and somehow made it possible for me to write the exam with the pry 6 kids.

I'm forever grateful for that opportunity.

If you think so...

Even a Layola student migrating abroad would have to follow school age.

Several mid to low budget schools have very intelligent students who are there because their parent cannot afford the fees, I still give them their medals.
