The reported drop in the price of cooking gas in the country has ignited heated reactions among Nigerians on Twitter.

On Sunday, Wale Adedayo, a freelance writer, took to the microblogging platform to share a receipt for cooking gas purchased on June 1.

The receipt showed that 12.5 kg of cooking gas — which reportedly ranged between N9,375 and N13,000 in May — now goes for N6,950.

12.5kg of Cooking Gas in May – N9375, 12.5Kg of Cooking Gas in June – N6950. Maybe…just maybe…we should speak out when prices go down too. This feels good,” he wrote.

The receipt was also shared by many others on Twitter in different contexts.

The development comes on the heels of controversies trailing President Bola Tinubu’s announcement that “fuel subsidy is gone“.

Some users argued that the drop in the price of gas is an indication that the price of petrol will also crash with time, when the subsidy is finally removed.

Others also said the government deserves to be applauded for the current price of gas.

WHAT DETERMINES THE PRICE OF GAS?

Unlike petrol, cooking gas is not subsidised by the government. This means that the price of cooking gas is majorly determined by market forces.

Speaking on this, Leo Ukpong, a professor of Financial Economics at American University School of Business, Yola, Adamawa state, described the reported drop in price as a “supply-driven phenomenon”.

“The production of gas is very different from the refinery process of petrol. In the first place, gas was not subsidised, so it is not part of the whole subsidy issue. Petrol or PMS was subsidised but the price of cooking gas has always been determined by market forces,” he told TheCable.

“Cooking gas is basically demand and supply. The drop in price could be due to an increase in supply. If that is the case, it means the gas plants in the country are now more efficient. I think it is a supply-driven phenomenon.”

To those idiots above hailing the drug lord for this, Kindly note that the FG doesn't control the price of gas, so it is not Tinubu nor APC that did this. The gas price is controlled by marketers. It is Safe to say that Tinubu did nothing here. He should revert back to when fuel was sold for #150 and then make adequate planning before removing fuel subsidy. I don't expect him to know this because obi the game planner will do everything when he has restore his stolen mandate.

Don't mind them

Ask them, what is the reason why it went as high as ₦900, no reasonable explanation

Why it came down, no reasonable explanation

Ask them again, why is kerosene and diesel prices still high, still no reasonable explanation

Yeah right! Remind us again, how much was gas before APC came on board😏 Before 2015, I bought 12.5kg for N2000+ undecided so talk better

Let me refresh your memory, prior to when Tinubu and Buhari were protesting in 2015, fuel was sold for N87.00/L undecided

Nlfpmod

It means that price of petrol can go as higher as #1000 per litre. Letting international market force to determine price of petrol is not good for economy because there is no electricity to run businesses

Op cooking gas price is still same here.

Even if 12.5kg come down to 6k which it has not, APC and Jagaban are stupid. How much was cooking gas before APC came into power?

Some people are here celebrating failures.

Are They Serious, if they piped every house in Nigeria and supply us with free gas, we will still have enough gas to export. Yet they are acting as if they are doing us favor.

So why did it go that high in the first instance...no reasonable explanation. What we heard then was that the dollar rate is high. Dollar rate is still high, why is the price of gas coming down. No explanation
And you think this government can be trusted

Fuel should continue to be subsidised, that is the only thing the common man is benefiting from this country as an Oil producing country

people are just shouting they should increase salary as if people working under government are up to 40% compare to people working under private sectors. If they increase salaries of government workers, what will be d faith of people working for private sectors that don't have anybody to fight for them for minimum wages. I think government should also have an organization that will be monitoring these private company. Some of them are wicked and heartless to pay peanut salaries to their staff, and still over used them. Some of them will even owe them salaries and if u report to police, they may turn the case on u if they bribe the police. Nigeria needs total reform on private sectors also.
